Saw an interesting Ruger New Vaquero today. Shorter barrel, grooved front strap, rubber grips, wide flat hammer. I did a little internet searching and discovered it was a Ruger New Vaquero Montado. Apparently it's a dealer exclusive (Davidsons), and it was only available in 45 Colt, or 357 Magnum. Some of the examples I see on the internet have wooden grips, but I like the look and the feel of 'old rubber' looking grips.

It was used, and the price was right, so I grabbed it. Feels very 'Cowboy Cool' in my hand.

The Montado was first introduced around 2007. It was designed with the mounted CAS shooter in mind. The grooves on the front of the grip frame are there to afford a better grip when riding fast, and the low hammer spur is meant to make one handed cocking easier.

I remember seeing those at a gun show years ago. Thought it was pretty neat looking, like a Colt's Sheriff's/Shopkeeper's model.

That makes sense as well. I believe Montado mean's 'mounted'.

I love mine, though I eventually replaced the hammer with a standard one. The barrel length suits me to a T, and the guns handling is a pure joy.

The standard hammer on the Vaquero can be easily replaced with a Super Blackhawk hammer.

I installed Super Blackhawk hammers on my Vaqueros when my wife and I were participating in Mounted Shooting. We liked them so well I have left them installed on the guns.
