I want to install a taller front sight on my Old Army. I have the sight, but I need to know what size punch I need to drift out the roll pin. The gun is stainless.
That is a great idea. Many thanks. For an one time job you can use the cheapest clockmakers screwdriver set you can find - just find the correct thickness, ground down the tip and proceed with moderate caution. Use screwdrivers with metal body.
That's what I used for yrs till I got a set of punches for Christmas.Darn near anything smaller than the hole for the pin. A finish nail ground to a flat point. I had to make a taller front for mine and used key stock. Easy install.
Did you drill the new sight or just epoxy it?I installed a taller front sight on my Ruger Old Army a couple of weeks ago. I used a 1/16" punch and it worked well.
That sight they sent me is harder than woodpecker lips.I drilled it. Punched the sight pin out and removed the original sight. Put the new sight in its place, lined it up and held it in firmly while I marked it where to drill with a 1/16" drill bit. Then removed the sight, drilled the hole, put the new sight back in place and drove the old pin in. This worked well for me. YMMV
