I already have the Ruger, and a Glock 19, but I was thinking of maybe trading the P95 off toward a P99. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with the Ruger, I thinks its a pretty nice pistol. I just find the appearance of the Walther P99 to be alot more "appealing". Taking all the pros and cons of these two 9mm's, which one would be the all around better weapon. You know the usual stuff, such as reliability, finish, durability, etc.... Price is not a factor since I already own the P95.

i have to agree with geronimo, for exactly what he said.

but also keep in mind that looks dosen't make a pistol, it dosen't matter what it l;ooks like just take the glock for example ugly as sin but it is a truely awesome handgun.

i owned a ruger p95 the latest version like you have, and i really liked all aspects about it as far as accuracy and reliability, but i am not to fond of many da/sa guns, about the only one that i have and like is the ruger p345, it is alot nicer than most other da/sa i have experience with. also the grip was to big for me and though it shot good it didn't fit me very well.

i also like to keep as many guns as possible in dao i really like the draw and shoot aspect, i don't know what your preferences are but that is a pretty big factor when buying most of my handguns.

please let us know what you decide.

There are two "latest versions" of the P99 - the QA and AS. I have an AS -- it's a great weapon. Remember, too, that the P99 comes with interchangeable backstraps so you can adjust the grip to your hand. Another big plus. The trigger on the P99 is much nicer than any Ruger.

The Ruger wins when it comes to magazine prices - P99 mags tend to be pretty pricey.

You talk about trading the P95 toward a P99 -- you do realize that it will only get you about half way there? P99's ain't cheap!

If I had to have only one - and I could afford it - it would be the P99.

If you buy the P99, you should sell the Glock and every other pistol you own. You should not try to mix and match the stupid magazine release (LEVERS up and down) found on the Walther & Hk with all the rest of the pistols in the world. I've watched highly trained SRT guys who shoot at least once a week and usually shoot 350+ trying to switch between Beretta and HK's. They miss the magazine release quite often. You just cannot teach your muscle memory to switch from one to the other. Just like you should NOT switch between a frame mounted brush down safety and a slide mounted brush up safety, you shouldn't switch between HK and the rest of the pistols in the world. THIS CAN GET YOU KILLED.

I would never buy either a P99 or HK.

Go read the Walther section at www.handgunforum.net - it is an awesome gun. I don't even bother buying 1911s anymore - The S/A pull on the P99 A/S 9mm (which is DA/SA and long SA) is fantastic.

There isn't even any comparison between a Ruger P95 and a P99.

Following nemoaz's logic I'd recommend looking at a S&W M&P semi-auto which will keep your manual of arms consistent with the Glock you say you intend to keep. The Ruger P95 is a good, solid, reliable pistol. However, most other top end semi-autos beat out the P95 in weight and ergonomics.

Of couse sometimes the best option is to keep a good solid gun like the P95, be patient, and save up for the next purchase. Holding on to your P95 as a backup wouldn't be a bad idea.

The Walther's a good looking gun, and I feel like the grip would be extremely comfortable if my hands were just a little bit smaller. It's not as uncomfortable as the G19 is for me, because the finger grooves are smaller on the P99.

There are a lot of very good very reliable guns out there. You just have to try them out yourself and see what you like. Both the Ruger and P99 have been proven as great guns, and they're very different.

It appears there is a "love-in " for Walther going on here. Myself, I'll be very wary of the newest p99's out there. It seems Walther is having some serious QC issues as of late.

Remember, too, that the P99 comes with interchangeable backstraps so you can adjust the grip to your hand. Another big plus.
that is true and a great feature, more and more makers are doing that now and i think it is a great step to meeting the needs of many. smart marketing move. that's one thing i like about the p99's and the m&p's

Personally, I would stay with the Ruger. But that's just me. I knew as soon as I picked up a P85, that style of gun LIKES ME. I picked up a P89DC on March 3rd. I've put just a wee bit over 1000 rounds through it, 600 without cleaning it, and have not had a fail-to-anything. I like the size, the weight, the fit and the looks.

Now it's up to you to decide which of the 2 likes YOU better, and go with that one.

My P99 has been completely flawless. To me the ruger is like the budget line and the walther is another step up.

I'd say the Ruger, if only because I dislike DAO pistols personally.

Walther P99 A/S is not DAO - it is DA/SA.

The QA is more like a DAO - but not quite - it is like a Glock or XD. And then there is a TRUE P99 DAO.

I'm a fan of the Ruger P Series, but the P99 wins by a very wide margin.

BTW, the QA is an unusual trigger. It's different than a Glock (or Steyr) in that the weight of the pull in the take-up prior to the break is relatively light while the QA take-up is heavier right throught the pull/break. The Glock/Steyr trigger is comparatively two stage while the QA is a one single stage pull. It's much like a double action pull, but there is no set-up to single action after the shot is fired or a pull of the trigger if the gun is uncocked without pulling the slide back approximately 1 cm. The QA isn't for everyone, but I'm liking it a lot. I'd be very curious to try the double action only and may consider it for the PPS if it is offered.

I like Ruger's more. They seem more durable and wil last you longer. I do not like smith&wesson too much anymore.

If I were choosing between a Hi Point and a Ruger - no contest. Take the Ruger.

If I were choosing between a Ruger and a Walther P99 (any version, though I prefer the AS) - again no contest. Take the Walther.

No offense to the Hi Point owners.:neener:

...the QA take-up is heavier right throught the pull/break.
A very similar effect can be achieved with a 3.5lb connector and an NY1 trigger spring in the Glock.

I'd probably pick the P95. Besides being cheaper, the mags are cheaper and the gun is tremendously durable. I wouldn't be afraid to put anything stamped 9mm through one while I'm a bit more careful about what my "higher-end" 9mms get fed. Given the ammo situation at the moment, having a gun that will digest ANYTHING without inducing worries about wear or durability is pretty useful.

The vote is close - but you notice that there are not many comments in favor of the Ruger - I expect that it's just Ruger fans voting that way who have never even tried or own a P99.

I voted for the P99. I have three 9mm A/S models (older style) and have at least 10K between them with no malfs.

Myself, I'll be very wary of the newest p99's out there. It seems Walther is having some serious QC issues as of late.
First I have heard of this. Any links to back this up?
