Alright gang, it has now come down to two .45cal pistols. I am seriously looking at purchasing either the RugerP345 or SigP220. The reasons for these choices are because I wanted, of course the .45, and that they are SA/DA pistols. I did not include the 1911 since I was not really looking into a 1911 platform at this time. I may end carrying them also. Comments are highly appreciated.

Thanks.

There is 1 and ONLY 1 reason to buy a ruger 45acp over a Sig P220........ You don't have the money for the Sig. Ruger makes a fine gun. And the P345 is no exception. But it's NOT a Sig P220. The Ruger NEW is going to go for $400-$450. Used; easily around $300. The Sig P220 NEW is going to go for $850-$1100. And a USED one between $500-$650. Of course there's always a great deal out there some place. There's also ones with night sights, extra magazines, grips, and other accessories that can alter the price. But you are talking literally of double the price NEW OR USED of a P220 of a Ruger P345. Personally, there isn't one bad thing I could ever say about the Sig P220. And the ONLY thing better than a New P220 is an older model made in West Germany. But the ruger is a fine gun. Personally, I think Ruger makes one of the BEST revolvers in the world. Them and S&W are the leaders. But in the semi-auto world, Ruger isn't the same level of quality as their revolvers. Just my opinion. And personally; I love the DA/SA of the P220. All my defensive carry guns are DA/SA guns. You just can't beat the quality, reliability, and accuracy of the P220.

Get the Ruger and learn how to tune it up. There's nothing better than being your own smith. It's not really that difficult of work with the many resources available, just check your work before pulling the bang switch.

about the Ruger...take heed about the magazine safety disconnect that blocks the firing pin...DO NOT dryfire without a mag inserted

That's exactly what I was going to say. :)

Rugers are always good reliable guns, but they lack soul;)
IMO the 220's grip fits much better and points better.
Some people complain that Sigs have too high a bore axis, but the Rugers feel really high even compared to a Sig. Sig bore axis heights have never bothered me at all but the Rugers do.

There's just something about the 220 that feels so much better than the 345.

You should shoot both and buy the one that you shoot well and that feels good to you.
But, if you want my opinion it's 220 all the way unless you don't have the cash to put down on one.

i'm not a big fan of Ruger semi-auto pistols, but of them, their .45 ACP models runs seem to run the best...my personal favorite is the P-90.

but i am a big fan of the Sig 220. my favorite is an old folded slide/alloy frame W. German that i carried for years as a duty gun. i also have a teaching 220ST (stainless steel frame) and another being customized.

the workmanship of the 220 rises to another level, the accuracy is outstanding and the stock trigger is superior...and can be tuned to be outstanding

if i were looking at a polymer framed .45 ACP, i would lean toward a striker fired model...the exception might be the HK45, because of it's outstanding ergos

I own both. Though I like The Ruger P series .45s, and the P345 is an ergonomic improvement over the older models, the Sig comes in first. Money is the only reason to choose the Ruger over the Sig. You could like I did and buy both.

I agree with most of previous posts that the Sig P220 is a step above the Ruger P345 in fit and finish and over all refinement.

However, I believe the Ruger has some features that could be viewed as an advantage over the Sig depending on the user.
The Ruger features:
- it is slimmer (especially through the grip area)
- it is lighter (not by a lot, but it is)
- it has a shorter trigger reach (you can get a short-reach trigger for the Sig)
- it has a safety (Sig only decocks)
- it is lefty friendly (the Sig decocker is on the left side only)

Those features may not be an advantage to you depending on your needs, but they are differences to consider.

I have a P220 myself and can highly recommend it, but I do like my SW1911 a little more. Between the Sig P220 and the Ruger P345, you really are looking at two of the more commonly available rental guns at the ranges I know of, so you might want to rent both and shoot them side by side at the range and make your own informed opinion about which one works for you - skeeter_08

At this point I am just "piling on"

The P220 is heads above the Ruger. The Ruger is a great pistol but is always going to run second to a P220.

You do win either way.

My two ravorite .45's are the Ruger P97 and a West German P220. If you are short of $$$ get the Ruger 345, if not buy the SIG you will not regret it!

Try to find a Certified Pre-Owned P220. Saw one once for $550. Didnt buy it and I still hate myself for it.

Well, I may be guilty of piling on too, but the 220 is the way to go.

Though I think you'd be happy with either one, the difference to me is night and day.

I really, really like the Sig, whereas I think the Ruger is okay.

YMMV.

Get a SS P345 and a blue one, for the price of a P220.:D The Ruger can definately shoot, and maybe as well as the Sig, but it lacks refinment. My P345 could shoot as well or better then my Loaded Springfield, S&W SC Commander, and Kimber UCII.
