Is there any reason I could not use a Ruger P90 for IDPA if I were to decide to try it out?

Or, would I be better off trying it with the gun I will be using for a CCW, Taurus PT145?

I don't know anything about IDPA, but I can tell you the P90 is a very acurate and reliable .45acp. It's the only of my five pistols that has never malfuntioned (including my Glock 19, but that was when it was new). The only pistol that I have better groups with is my ruger markIII.

Just my $.02, but I shoot my P90 a lot in various competitions, especially in those that are momentum games like that involve bowling pins or pepper poppers. I've out shot a LOT of 1911s in games like that. I shoot it well, one of my favorite guns. I was shooting it in IDPA because I shoot it so well, however, I switched to 9mm in a P85 I got cheap from a guy for two reasons. First, 9mm doesn't recoil as bad, less muzzle flip means quicker double taps and multiple shot strings. Too, I found with my P90, on tac and speed reloads, I had a bad problem with occasionally getting the mag hung on the edge of the mag well. Not an easy way to bevel that mag well. With the tapered 9mm mags, I don't have the problem.

But, for some reason, probably accuracy of the gun, my scores weren't much better with the 9. The trigger on that P90 is just hand over fist better than the P85 and I shoot it so much better, plus the gun shoots 1" 25 yard groups off the bench where that P85 is more like 2.5".

My philosophy on IDPA, though, is shoot what you carry. If you only care about being competitive, Glock seems to be way to go. That's what most people shoot. But, I was shooting expert with my P85 and P90 when I quit. I don't carry Glocks. I think you can do well with the P90. If I ever get back into it, I may try to bevel the mag well best I can and try the P90 again. I can deal with the .45's muzzle flip, but that hangin' the mag on reloads thing really miffs me off.

No reason not to use your P90 in IDPA.

I'd suggest that you enter the CDP (Custom Defense Pistol) category instead of SSP (Stock Service Pistol). The reason is, you'll be up against folks with a similar level of .45 ACP recoil to deal with, instead of shooting a harder kicking .45 against lighter kicking Nines, and being limited by the gun's design to eight-round mags, you'll be up against folks with the same limitation (only 8 rounds per mag allowed in CDP). If you're shooting against SSP competitors allowed to have 10 rounds in their mags, you'll have to reload against the clock more often than they in the course of a match, and won't have as level a playing field.

When Ernest Langdon was shooting SIGs, he shot CDP with the P220 and won the Nationals against the 1911 guys. The double action first shot is not a huge concern, but a level playing field in terms of round count and recoil challenge will probably make you proportionally more successful in CDP than SSP with a .45 and eight-round mags.

Good luck!

One of our guys shoots a Ruger p-something(single stack .45)and does very well...in fact we both just made SS in CDP this week(He w/ his Ruger ,me w/ my Taurus PT945)
Rugers are like Volvo's...."they're boxy, but good."
Concerning reloads:I find it way easier to do a tactical w/ a single stack than a double stack.

If you're going to try IDPA for the first time, the Ruger would be fine. It's all about getting out there, getting your gun dirty, meet some nice people, have a great time, maybe learn something or two and wanting to do it again

The Ruger will work fine in competition. I use to use my P94 in club matches and it did very well.
