Hey there, long time lurker, first time poster...So I've owned this Ruger P95 for about 3 weeks now, bought brand new online. It's been shooting flawlessly. Yesterday I went and took a conceal carry course by Jerry Miculek and shot about 36 rounds through it, after I got home and was cleaning it like every time I shoot...I found this weird abrasion, or something, on the inside of the barrel near the receiving end. I found this after running my bore snake through it, and even tried very lightly scraping at this in case it was something of a bullet left behind, but to no avail. I took what I can for pictures of it, and I'm pretty sure I'll need to call Ruger about this...but just wanted to see if you could help me describe what this is on the inside of my barrel. Here's links to pictures.

I'm pretty freaked out, this is my first handgun I've ever owned and definitely don't want to fire this until I have this fixed. Thanks for any help!

Welcome to THR. Looks to me like a bad barrel defect of a large chunk of lead. Looks to be close to the muzzle, have you tried to chip it off with a pick?

KingNothing.......A Metallica fan?

I tried taking an unfolded paper clip and scraping at it a bit, but didn't want to cause more problems, it's at the receiving end of the barrel. Should I try really scraping at it?

and yes, big Metallica fan, lol

It seems like something that's coming up off the barrel, more like a mound of metal on it. Going to try and take a tooth pick to it.

It looks like a shard of copper jacketing that's been pounded and flattened into the rifling.
If it's a barrel defect then it's difficult to imagine that it could have passed inspection.
I suppose that you didn't look down the barrel after you bought it or notice if it was it already there?

If it does not come off go get some Hoppes #9 bore cleaner and let it sit on the spot for a minute then try to scrape it off. after that give another bore snake pass. What are you putting on the boresnake as a cleaner?

@articap that makes sense...the spot only appeared after yesterday's shooting. I always inspect the bore after running my bore snake through it and it only appeared last night.

@ThePunisher'sArmory I tried scraping at it with a toothpick for a few minutes and a very small part of it seemed to be removed. I put Hoppes no 9 solvent on the middle of the snake when running it through. Should I pick up specific bore cleaner Hoppes 9?

Nope thats the stuff im talking about. Get a cotton swab and put some #9 directly on the spot. Let it sit about 1 min then scrape again. That should get it off. Hoppes #9 and CLP is all I have ever used cause it does a good job. Hopefully that will get the spot off. Good luck.

Not trying to tell ya what to do but when using the bore snake put your hoppes in the section closest to the pull string and just to the brass brushes. That allows the solvent to "lube" the brass bruses and the tail section behind the brushes will remove the excess solvent.

Alright, will try. Thanks for the advice...I'm brand new to all of this, so I'm very open to ideas of how to do the best job. Hopefully this does the trick, I've been freaking out since discovery of this.

Oh wow!! A huge chunk came off while I was dabbing the No 9 on with a cotton swab!! Awesome! Phew, you're a sanity saver sir. Thank you!!

Edit* after letting soak and scrubbing with tooth pick a bit, then running bore snake again, it is now back to pristine condition.

Next time, try a real cleaning rod, and a bronze bore brush.

Bore Snakes just ain't much good for copper jacket fouling.
IMO: Or anything else either, if you can get a real cleaning rod in it from the back end.

rc

Yeah, I'm definitely going to pick up a rod and bore brush soon...I have one for my 22 rifle, I've just never run into a situation like this before for my pistol. I noticed there is still a TINY piece of the jacket left on the bore and will use a rod and brush to get it 100% before I shoot again. Thanks for the input RC.
