Hi folks. Seems that the P97 has had its "issues" in the past related to the slide-stop coming out at times during firing. I had one a while back and sold it, now I'm thinking of picking up another one. Not the prettiest of the gun selections out there, but it fits my hand perfectly.

Has anyone heard about developments or improvements related to the P97? Has Ruger dealt with the slide-stop issue?

What are your experiences, in general, with the P97?

Thanks.

Edited to say - I bought the P97 and there seems to be a real difference with the slide stop. It is tight and does not seem like it could move on its own in any way. Put several hundred rounds through it and it is a great shooter, better than my G21. I like it!!!!

What issue? It's hard to answer a question like that when there is no documentation or support. I could say that S&W "K" Frames have problems with cracked topstraps... but what does that mean if I don't provide statistics, documentation, and the backstories.

The Ruger P95 slide stop will come out if you line it up with either the disassembly notch or the slide-stop notch. It's held in by a nub on the slide stop that rides inside the frame. If it pops out, it would have to be a serious problem given the slide velocity as it pases either of these points. I seriously doubt this is a problem.

I know that on my P90 there is a retaining washer on the back of the slide catch to prevent you from pulling it all the way out. Now I did read a post somewhere about Ruger doing away with that washer on the latest models I believe. If your catch still has the groove for the washer in it you could probaly call Ruger for a new washer, if not then I suggest that you call Ruger and voice your concern. They have excellent cutomer service and will fix for free, the only downside is that you may be without your pistol for awhile.

Sorry I just saw that you don't have one yet. So while your looking pop off the slide and check for that washer.

I have a DAO P97 and I think it is a pretty darned good buy. For close range of 20 feet or less, that gun will save someone's life. Rugers have some great reliability. I love their 45ACP guns. THe only thing is the grip does get slick with perspiration. I love the slim single stack (yeah, an American company who makes a 45ACP, a REAL 45) and the great polished barrel ramp. People put on the slip-on grips to help. It is a wonderful economic solution for self-defense guns - Ruger autos. No cheap foreign surpluses here. I have had the slide stop work its way out before, since it is one of the older guns, but Ruger sent me the repair. Even with the slide stop working out, it did shoot.

The issue you talking about was supposed to be fixed 2 years or so ago with a change to the slide stop itsself havent heard many people complaine about this happening unless they bought old stock

Got my P97DC NIB about 18 months ago .... admittedly not exactly had multiple 100's of rounds thru but ... performance is flawless. No issues at all. Great shooter.

Side thought ... the Hogue slip on grip is a terrific plus on P series IMO ... feels way better.

Hipower,

Some P97s did have issues as you described. Ruger fixed the problem a while back. If you were to buy an older gun adn have problems, just call Ruger's revolver support number and ask for Mike Smiska. Ask for the replacment parts and he'll send them to you for free.
