My understanding is that the Ruger PC4 (.40S&W carbine) was designed for LEO use, to share magazines with the Ruger handguns they were carrying. I bought one because for a time I only had access to indoor ranges, and they would only allow handgun calibers - this gave me the ability to take a "rifle" to the range some times.

So now I have this PC4 lying around, and my brother has an occasional coyote problem (he has domestic pets). He only owns three acres, so he'd never be shooting at over 75 yards - would a PC4 be suitable? What type of ammo would you use in that situation (hollowpoint or ball)?

thanks for the info -

That would be a great gun for coyotes. I am planning on buying a PC9 to go coon hunting with. If you can shoot coons I am sure you could get a coyote or two. I would get some of the lightweight HPs.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm not a hunter so I don't know much about how calibers translate to animals by size or distance... I just know enough to know it matters.

I have done a little coon hunting with a .40 S&W before and it does put a hurtin on coons I will tell you that. It's wounds were like a 22 Mag on steriods.

rugers

i have the weaver rail mount if either of you want it.... forty bucks or best offer.

A .40 with say a 155 or 180g hollowpoint would do the trick nicely. I know a guy who's taken a coyote with multiple .22 hits, so anything 9mm or bigger at close range could do it. The .40 certainly has the power at under 100 yards. Aim behind the front "armpit" and squeeze.
