Any Ruger Security, Service, and Speed Six collectors out there? Or am I the only one who thinks these guns are more desirable than GP100's?

I like the Speed Six. I have had two, one blued and one SS matched pair but I traded the blued one.

Here is my SS Speed Six. Nice!

I'm not a collector per say; but a couple of years ago I came across an
almost new Police Service Six (looks alot like the picture in the previous post) that was a police auxillary trade in.
As I didn't own a .357 mag. revolver yet, I "impulse" bought it on the spot.
Best $160.00 I ever spent!:D

I love the Security Six. I have another on the way. I think these are the most underated revolver out there.

I am an 'accumulator'. Carried one for 18 years as an LEO/instructor. At that time the duty gun was the 2 3/4" Speed Six--I used my own 4" square butt guns instead. Took the Ruger armorer's course on them. Wore out forcing cones on two with hot .357s, had both guns rebuilt by the factory and still have them. I pick them up if the price and condition is right. The count is now six of various flavors, all 4" guns. My son has one with him in his travels, and my daily driver is still a 4" stainless fixed sighted .357. Will probably pick up an adj. sighted one on principle some time.

I have a very, very slick GP-100, but compared to the 'Six' series it is a heavy, clumsy gun and not at all suited to daily concealed carry.

I think Ruger would be very well advised to bring it back with a GP style stock, but will not do it.

In a strictly military environment I would probably go for a 1911 or BHP, but I don't go looking for trouble anymore. The Ruger seems sufficient.

I wouldn't call myself a collector, but I bought a blue 4" .357 Police Service Six nearly 20 years ago. A fine piece of work.

That reminds me, I still intend to measure the trigger pull with the reduced power hammer spring in it. I put the original spring back in because the new r-p one made the pull much heavier. Go figure. The new spring was substantially longer, though of slightly smaller gauge. I left the new trigger spring in because it was about the same as the old one.

JohnBT, I had the same problem with a Wolf RP hammer spring. Much longer and much heavier. One day when I was bored I ended up trimming a few coils off it with a dremel cut-off wheel (after ruining two sets of wire cutters). I think I trimmed 3 or 4 whole coils, and now it's quite a bit lighter, and 100% reliable with Winchester primers.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I am not alone in my opinion. Below is a photo of the five in my "accumulation." As you can see, four are Security Six's in .357 and one is a Service Six in 9mm. The 4 inch stainless is an everyday shooter; my wife likes it so well she has claimed it.

Ruger DA Sixes

Bought my first .357 Security Six, NIB,6 in barrel last Sept in a gun shop where it had been a trade in. I changed factory grips to Hogue goncalo alves no finger groove, which fit my hand better. That got me looking, and I found a .357 4 in barrel Security Six earlier this year at a gun show, but no box, and put Hogues on it too. A couple of weeks ago, at another gun show, I traded for a .357 Security Six, 2 3/4 inch barrel, adjustable sights, no box. When I got it home and looked at it more closely, I realized it had no dimple on the right recoil shroud like my other two ( which makes it earlier manufacture), and it had a round butt and factory round butt grips. I thought all Security Sixes were square butt/adjustable sight, all Speed Sixes were round butt/fixed sight, and Police Service Sixes(or Service Six) were square butt/fixed sight. Chad at Red Eagle News Exchange believes this 2 3/4 Security Six with adjustable sights/round butt is very rare and wants to publish an article about it. It makes a very nice carry gun with the round butt, 2 3/4 in barrel and adjustable sights. Black Dog

Black Dog,

I have had those grips for such a long time that I don't remember where I got them, and I don't know much about them. The only marking is on the inside in white ink that appears to have been put on with a rubber stamp. It is hard to read, but I think it says A & P, India. The screw and the inserts for the screw both appear to be made of brass.

That particular gun is the only one of mine that does not have the original finish. It showed a lot of holster wear when I bought it and I had it polished and re-blued.

I once owned a Liberty model 4" stainless Security Six, but it was in my blazer that was stolen in 1990. I keep hoping that it will turn up some day, but the chances are slim.

The 2 3/4 inch gun came from an estate in California and was LNIB complete with the original bill of sale for $172.50. I probably won't ever shoot it.

I bought the 9mm with the idea of shooting it in IDPA SSR competition. I had the action tuned and it is slick; unfortunately the gun is very inaccurate and the POI is off from the POA by about 7" at 20 yards. I think the barrel is probably the same ID as the barrels that were put on the .357's, so it probably won't ever group with .351 bullets. I keep thinking I will send it somewhere and get a new barrel and adjustable sights put on it, but haven't gotten around to it. I have since bought a S&W 610 that I shoot in IDPA, so I don't have as much use for the 9 as I planned.

Curious, what are these mysterious .351" bullets you speak of? :D

At any rate FWIW, my .357Mag Security Six has a bore diamter of .355".

My mistake. I meant .355 bullets. And I have never slugged the barrel on the gun so I don't really know. Is the .355 yours measures land or groove diameter? And do you know what the bore diameter is on a barrel intended for 9mm only?

.355" is the groove diameter, which is indeed the nominal for guns chambered for 9mm Luger. When I measured that, it occurred to me that maybe Ruger just used the same barrel on all 'Sixes (it's a 4" SS btw).

So, that would mean that the barrel on my 9mm is probably .355 and is correct for shooting 9mm Luger ammo?

Then the terrible groups must be due to something else. I can see the POI being off due to barrel not being turned in quite all the way, but I have never seen a quality pistol that shot a pattern (I hesitate to call it a group) as bad as this one. I didn't shoot a lot of ammo through it (less than 100 rounds), so maybe I didnt' give it a fair chance. The ammo I shot was UMC $5.99 a box stuff.

I am open to suggestions.

At the very least I'd try a bit of better ammo. Winchester, Magtech, Fiocchi, S&B, or even some pricey hollow points. If it still groups like crud, I guess you're stuck calling Ruger or a 'smith and seeing what they can do for you.

HOWEVER! You ought to slug your barrel to find out if it really is .355".

I agree about the Security Six being underated. I have a blue one with a 6 inch barrel that I would never get rid of. It is one of my favorite revolver.

I've had a Security Six w/6" barrel for several years. It is the most accurate pistol I've ever shot. Absolutely will not trade it.
