My Dad has been looking to get a decent 357 for a bit now and I've found someone selling a Ruger Security Six w/ a 6" bbl. It seems pretty tight, the bore is shiny but there is some fading in the blue, especially in those places where there was holster rub. I'd give if a Very Good rating overall.

The person is looking to get $220 for it. I've done a search and seen that most people liked this model. Do you think it's worth the money in the condition I've stated.

Let me know your thoughts.'

Thanks,
Troy

Troy, this weapon sounds pretty good to me. I had a stainless 6-inch Security Six many years ago and loved it. I sold it to buy a .44 Redhawk. I still have the Redhawk and it's one of my favorites but I've always regretted selling the Security Six. :( Well, actually it and every other gun I ever sold. Try to negotiate the price (the guy expects you to) but the price doesn't seem too bad to me (for my neck of the woods).

I expect your dad will love it, I would. Besides, if he doesn't like it, you could always keep it. ;)

$200 to $250 or so is typical around here in that condition for the shorter barreled models.

I'd buy it at that price.

I've read that the Ruger salesmen used to throw the guns around the police ranges to demonstrate how strong they were and ever drive over them.

I've had the fixed-sight version w/ 4" bbl., the Police Service Six, for about 18 years.

I used to own a stainless 2 3/4" Speed Six, paid about $275 for it many years ago and regret selling it. I'd buy that 6" Security Six for $220.

Buy it ! I've had a 4" stainless version for many years, many thousands of rounds through it, and I love it. Put a set of Hogue rubber monogrips on it and you're in business.

Agree with above--Get it.

Found one few years ago for brother, bad holster wear, 4 " everything thing else in really great shape. Bro had nothing due to a theft of his and FIL firearms.

Wish I'd kept it, he rarely shoots it, and he never followed through with CCW I paid for...

My buddy let me have it for $165 !!! Special price due to situation bro in...argghh.

I think it is a good gun and price is fair. However, if your Dad is 40+ years old he may be better served with a four inch barrel. As you age you generally have problem getting a sharp sight picture. For some a short sight radius offers a degree of help in this area.

I just bought one, stainless 4" for $265. Polished it up good and it turned out to be a solid 97%, shot it a little and gave it away. Gave it away on the condition that I get it back if ever it needs a home. Great guns for the money, you could not touch a S&W in the same condition for less than $350 here.

Thanks everyone for the great advise. Going on the overwhelming positive remarks, my Dad and I picked up the Ruger over the weekend.

The grip seemed a little narrow for my taste, but my Dad liked the feel of it. The guy wanted $220 and after some brief haggling, he sold it to us for $210. I know, but it's still $10. Figure that's a box of Wallyworld 38s.

It was a little dirty, but after some liberal break free and Hoppes, the gun cleaned up nicely.

Thanks again for your input.

Good buy! I paid $240 for my 4" blued Security Six about 20 years ago and have never felt the need to own another wheel gun

We do have a 6" 586 S&W and my partner picked up one o' them itty bitty .38 +P S&W titanium hamerless jobbies (model 642?) so we have options.

But the Ruger will never be sold.:D

Congrat's on your purchase of the Ruger Security-Six.
I honestly believe that you and your dad will share
many hours of fun; with a very fine weapon. That
particular Ruger is destined to become a heirloom,
to be passed onto other family member's to enjoy.
I would have bought it in a flash!

The two I previously owned (1-4" blue. and 1-4"
stainless steel) were workhorse's. I NEVER, EVER
had a problem with either of them; just got a wild
hair up my nose and sold both of them for a small
profit. What A Mistake! I should have kept
both.

I can SO sympathize with that Ala Dan. What tempted me out of mine was a 3" M24. Good gun, but I should have kept the Ruger and found some other way to pay for the Smith - that darn 20/20 hindsight.

Glad to hear you got it and that you're both happy with it.

I read an interview with Bill Ruger years ago. He said that counting the design, tooling and daily production costs they never made a penny on the Security/Speed/Service Six series. Nothing at all wrong with the design or the finished guns themselves - they just couldn't make any money on them in the marketplace with all of the work that went into making them.

I bought my 6" Security Six years ago for $150, and spent another $90 for the local smith to install a colored front sight and smooth out the double action- now the best I've ever felt. Still my primary HD weapon. Did once have a problem with the ejector rod coming unscrewed which was fixed with a little Loctite- just remember it's reverse threaded. No better .357 IMHO.
