Ruger Security Six

We have two. Both SS, 4" guns. I bought mine for $279.00 new, in the late 1970's. I've shot countless rounds of 158 gr. JHP .357 rounds through it, along with a large number of 110 and 125 JHP .357 magnum rounds. The only modifications were the replacement of those funky little grip with a set of Daly combat grips, and a set of Millett sights. My wife liked it so much that she wanted to keep it. I found a late model version, with Pachmayr grips, and got it for her. She uses it as her bed-side gun. The triggers on both guns are smoother than the trigger on our Model 19-3. :D

The first handgun I ever bought was a 4" SS Security Six. I had wanted a 4" S&W M66. They cost too much for my budget when I could find one. I saw the Ruger as a second best revolver compared to the S&W. I changed my mind after I got the Ruger and shot it. I shot it a lot and it had hundreds, if not thousands, of rounds through it. It was fed everything from very light wadcutter reloads to the hottest factory .357 mags. It held up just fine. The action became better and better as I shot it. I carried it hunting and camping and as an off duty gun as a young cop. It was my only handgun for a few years except for the M10 HB that the PD issued me when I started there.

I still have that revolver and it would be the last one I would sell if I had no choice. I too, have had a few GP100's. I wanted to like them as much as the Security Six but never did. They just felt too heavy and clunky. The Six just spoiled me for the GP I guess. I would love to get a Speed Six snub but I never see any of them around these days...

My Security Six that I mentioned having on the way earlier came in Friday, and I got to try it out Friday evening. They are great guns! I can't believe the sweet trigger on mine. Don't get me wrong, the GP 100's are good guns, but after trying out my Six, it seems the GP's I've tried in the past leave a little something to be desired. It's too bad they don't make them like they used to!

I love my 4" SS. Very smooth trigger, very nice gun.

Be nice if more holsters, a set of fixed night sights, and more grip options were available...

I've had mine since 1984. I like everything about it. I will never sell it or trade it in. Mine is blued steel 6" SS. Great gun. If theirs a flaw ,I 've never found it.

Just installed a 10lb Wolff hammer spring and a SVL slip on grip.
(Hard to get grips for prefix 150's). I got this from my dad and I've been working on it here and there, next I need to sight her in. I've test fired it with the improvements with 357 loads and what a difference it made. This is a prefix 150-# and Wolff guaranteed the springs. When I got the springs I didn't like the pull and clipped the spring to much so I called and they sent me free 10,11 & 12's. They said the 150's are hit and miss on the correct springs. They are great people on helping & guarantees. I used Wolff springs in my 1911's about 9 years ago.
These guns are tough as nails but I don't know what the going price is. With my old eyes the 6" is nice to shoot.

The Ruger SS is just about the perfect .357. I wish I had kept everyone of mine, and haunt local gun shops with a an eye out for a good one.

I would guess the darn thing would cost 800 bucks. I heard some were that Bill Ruger said he didn't make a dime on the Six's that's why they re-designed and came up with the new ones.

Hmmm, my old stainless security six was 185 bucks brand new....in 1978 dollars. It was a strong gun, but my Smiths are/were more accurate and more refined. My current Taurus 66 outshoots it by a country mile. I mean, it's plenty combat accurate, but mine didn't like .38s worth a toot so I traded it off for a Blackhawk 6.5" that's much more accurate and you ain't SEEN strong. :D

Mine also was harder recoiling than my M19 Smith and my Taurus 66. I don't know why, but it has a lot of muzzle flip. A Hogue grip helped cushion the blow. The grips that came on it were sized for a NAA mini revolver.

I like my 6" stainless SS a lot but I feel there could be something amiss in the trigger mechanism. If you short stroke the trigger it can lock up, and there is some play in the hammer. The hammer will click into place when you thumb it back but there is a bit of play allowing you to pull it even further back after it notches. It's still in great condition with an extremely low round count, with no obvious wear on the inside.

SeanSw Did it every have a trigger job done?

I know this seems weird but I would take it apart and compare it to Confederates nicely posted pics on the first page.

I've had guns doing strange things and I would take them apart and put them back together and sometimes it would fix it. My new PA-63 safety would lock up and after racking the slide it would start working so I stripped it and it fixed it.

A trigger job was unlikely. When I disassembled it for the first time there weren't even score marks on the action. It was barely used and far from being broken in. I have reassembled it a few times hoping it would go together just right but the hammer slack and trigger problems persist.

I bought my Dad a 4" SS Security Six in the late 70s. He passed away a couple of years ago and we finally found it and most of his other guns. It, along with several other guns I bought him were never fired.

Dbshelton hate you lost your Dad but it's nice to find the guns. I believe when my dad pass's I'll be on a gun hunt because whats not in the safe is hiding all over the house.

SeanSw, I tried my best to get mine to do what your talking about couldn't do it. When I get half way or so the cylinder lock pops right in place and there's only about an 1/16 play when pulling the hammer back after cocking.

Better grab it! $350-400. is the going price. A great, dependable handgun I bought one new in about 1980. I sold it and regretted for years. I finally found a beautiful ss, 2 3/4" barrel with original grips and a set of Hoags for $400. Snatched it up and I'll never sell it!

I have the exact same gun ......6 inch blue Security Six. This is a wonderful revolver and arguably the nicest revolver Ruger ever made!!
I LOVE mine!!! Buy it! They don't make them anymore.

security six 357 magnum stainless steel

bought new in 1983 fired about 100 rounds in it mostly 38s and a few mags.felt very safe with it on my nightstand 27 years later decided to get into some target practice cleaned it took it to the range today shot factory ammo only remington jhp 357 50 rounds shot fine and my accuracy amazed me after not practicing for so many years and then i fire the last round in the gun and the barrel flew off and hit the range backstop about 100 foot away didnt realize any thing happened till i heard it bounce on the floor have always had complete trust in this gun to fire correctly if i ever needed it for home defense the range owner said he never seen anything like this happen before he sent it out to ruger today they boxed it up while I was there if they repair it not sure I will have any trust in it again anyone else ever have this happen and do you think they will repair or replace it have never wanted an auto for fear of ftf or eject problems any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated boy I loved having that gun by my bed Thanks donho

1)Contact Ruger and tell them what happened to your Security-Six! They would want to fix this gun for you, if they still have a barrel in their inventory.

2)Once Ruger fixes your Security-Six, you won't have to worry about your "freak" accident happening again. This is because Ruger had made approximately 1.5 million of their "Six Series" revolvers and they have had a wonderful trouble free history!
