I have been intrigued by these guns. I don't know anything about them other than they handle well at the gun shop and Rugers have a great durability rep'.

1.Does anyone know the difference(s) between the two models?
2.Also I found two of these, one fired and one unfired. I was a bit surprised to see the fired one had a loose crane but the cylinder end play was very little while the unfired gun had a tight crane and the cylinder end play was at least double the fired gun.
3.Are these guns perhaps not quite as durable as typical Rugers?
4.Any other experienced opinions would be greatly welcomed.
5. Would one be better off buying a SW 19 or 686 or just SW in general?

Thanks

I own a 150 prefix 2-3/4 in security six. It's a great and durable gun. If its as durable as the gp100 series. . . . i couldn't say. The internet told me that Ruger discontinued the Six line in favor of the GP line because the profits were too thin. . .but thats what the internet said so take it knowing it might not be entirely accurate.

It's a great firearm- the speeds have fixed sights, i know that for sure; but i believe later prefix (151+) security sixes rounded the frame a bit as well. I am no expert though.

If it handles well and the price is reasonable, I doubt any six line firearm will disappoint :)

Your #1 was answered and I can't comment on #2 without seeing the gun. The Speed Six I have does not have a loose crane. As far as your other questions.

#3-The Security/Speed Six is very durable. I related in another post a test that I helped conduct where these Rugers went to 20K rds of full magnums (one had timing issues at 15K rounds) when they stopped the test.
#4- I would rate the durability of these guns as much better than a K frame and at least as good, maybe better than a L frame.
#5- Not as durable as a K frame and is basically the same size, as good as a L frame but in a smaller package, maybe not as good as a N frame but a GP100 probably is. In my opinion, Ruger triggers are not as light as S&W but they are smooth. Smooth is more important than light. You can shoot a smooth 20lb trigger well but a gritty 10lb is horrible.

Thanks for all the help

You guys are a great and valued resource for my addiction.

Thank you.
