Ruger semi-Auto reliability? (P95, LC9, SR9)

I can't say I have ever heard that Ruger semi-autos were unreliable; just that some of the older P series guns were a bit bulky and lacking somewhat in ergonomics. For myself I have found the SR9c to be a very well designed and built pistol and great for the purpose of concealed carry.

I shoot a Ruger SR9.

My gun has somewhere over 4K rounds through it. I don't really clean it all that often. So far, its jammed on me once, after I'd put who knows how many rounds through it without a cleaning, during an IDPA match in the pouring rain. Thats it.

an unknown number of USPSA and multi-gun matches - no malfunctions.
Chris Costa's Handgun 2 class - No malfunctions.
Weekly plate matches for the past year or so, once a week - no malfunctions.

I think its a pretty reliable gun.

P-90 worked 100%

My experience with RUGER pistols is limited. I had a RUGER P-90 .45ACP when I lived outside the U.S. and it fired every shot and was 100% reliable. I sold it before I came back. It was clunky and I decided to stick with 9m.m. I never found a 1911 that was more reliable.

I trust my life to Jesus but back up my prayers with a P345. Some issues early on with 185gr ammo I got for free but never any with 230gr ball. 185 issues resolved after a couple hundred more rounds through the gun.

I had an LC9, which ate everything I fed it. I hated the trigger, but it cycled reliably and ejected strongly. I would trust my life with that reliability.

I had a Kel Tec PF-9. I wouldn't trust one with a dollar.

I carry an SR9c every day. 1,100 rounds through it. Zero failures. If anything, it cycles powerfully. It ejects rreeeeaaaallllyyy strongly to the right. Specifically, it slings casings about 6 feet to the right. I like that. It is everything I want in a carry weapon.

I'll say it: that instructor doesn't know what he is talking about. I love Ruger, but my bias aside, they are routinely noted for reliability. Even Ruger haters will agree to that. Some people have philosophical issues with ruger, but few have legitimate gripes about reliability. Good cs too.

Thanks for the wealth of replies folks!. I actually picked up an SR22p today. I'm gonna see if I can get used to a DA/SA trigger. If not I have a fun plinker and will pick up an SR9 rather than a p95. Thanks folks!

Sadly, the only Ruger that I have heard of reliability issues with is the SR22. I have never owned or operated one, so take this with a grain of salt.

In nearly 1000 rounds, the only issue I've had is fail to fire with a bad batch of WWB ammo. Otherwise, it's been a perfect gun.

The P-85 was designed to compete in the military trials that eventually lead to the adoption of the Beretta. The Ruger was one of the 1st to withdraw from the trials and simply couldn't keep up with the others.

That may, or may not be relevent. It was a new design that may have needed time to get the bugs worked out and current guns in side by side shooting may perform much better.

I've had several over the years, although I've not tried the new strker fired versions. The P-series guns I've owned in 9mm, 40, and 45 have been good enough to satisfy me. I'd trust one and wouldn't mind seeing our military use one of the Rugers.

I have a P85 and P90. Both guns feed anything and I have never had a problem with reliability. Accuracy is less than "tighter" guns, but more than adequate for a service pistol.

I am also a LEO and instructor. Another voice to add to the "He doesn't know what he is talking about." In my experience, Rugers are more reliable than Glocks. *gasp*

I personally own a P94 and SR9c. Both function flawlessly. I only had one misfire on the SR9c and it was a FTE less than 200 rounds into the break in period. To date I have over 3000 rounds through the barrel so one hiccup is nice to see.

On a side note, would the SR22 make a good understudy for P95?
I have two SR22 Rugers and shoot them a LOT (home range).

I don't know about being a "understudy" but IMO most all shooting is beneficial.

Since I got the SR22 I shoot it more than all my other guns put together.
I keep all seven magazines loaded and about 5 days/evenings (laser) a week I'll shoot the gun in the back yard.

As for the military trials, the P85 was Ruger's First center-fire semi-automatic pistol. It wasn't designed with the military trials in mind, and was still relatively new to the market. None of the other competitors were using totally new designs.

From what I've heard, Ruger wasn't really aware of just how much paperwork was involved, and dropped out because of time limits involving the paperwork, not mechanical failures, per see.

The Automotive Tank Command bought 5000 Ruger P95 pistols to give to the Afghani Police and Military. They seem to have felt that the Ruger would live longer than the M9 pistol in their hands. We certainly weren't short on M9 pistols at the time.:)

Had a P95 that didn't work. Proved to be due to an off center firing pin hole in the breech face so that the firing pin did not hit near the center of the primer.

My KP90DC is not only stone reliable, built like a tank, but it's target grade accurate! I had a P95 for a while and now have a P85. Neither is the equal of the P90 in trigger or accuracy, but they're dead stone reliable and will feed ANYthing in spec. My P90 will feed an empty case just fine, have done it just to see.

Really like my lc9. Accurate and never a problem. Takes a little while to get comfortable with the trigger but once you get used to it it's a great little gun.

Don't know about the SR9 or LC9, but I have owned many P95s, and they never failed me. Never. The P95 is cheap, tough, and reliable. It's a perfect car gun, or night stand gun. Would not carry it concealed, though.
