I just picked up a nice ruger service six. I know that really the main difference between the service six and the speed six is the rounded grip. My buddys speed six feels better in my hand so I was wondering if there was a way to mod the handle or get different grips to make them more like the ones for the speed six...

Has any one done this before? If so, please let me know what you ended up doing!

Thanks!

Pull off the grips and compare the grip frames side-by-side. there might be enough metal to grind the square grip down to the round style. Obviously this is easiest done on a stainless gun so you don't have to worry about refinishing.

And when you've got both side-by-side, take a picture so we can all see. :)

Will do! Mine just happens to be stainless so it might just work! I am going to pick it up from the FFL tomorrow so I will post pics after...

Thanks!

Please don't butcher innocent guns... what has it ever done to you?

Just trade it, I'm sure someone is sitting on a speed six and is thinking how much better if only it weren't so round.

It doesn't matter if you grind off the corners of a gun for a rounded grip. Who sees it, anyway? And yes, it makes the gun feel very much better. I've done it to several of mine. If you can find rounded grips and use them as a guide, score and grind. Then smooth the finish out.

Here are some examples:

You can always put the square ones back on. You can't do this
with a GP-100!

Ruger expert I ain't but: Make sure you can get grips in config you want before you start grinding. I've had a couple speed / security sixes. The first three digits of the serial # determine what grip you'll be looking for. Some are really tough to find. I actually prefer the SB 2 3/4".

Thanks everyone!

I picked her up last night... Posted some pics here. I am going to see my buddy this week and we will take a look. He also happens to work for a metal shop so they have all the tools I will ever need. Actually, I think I am going to let him do the work since he does metal work for a living. Probably do a much better job any way. :)

Here you can find a few pics... http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=450211

Thanks!
