I have an itch for a Ruger SP-101. I'm looking at the 3" barrel. Now I was wondering about sights. I don't like adjustable sights on carry guns -- snag risk. But I would like the option of installing aftermarket sights, such as the meprolight night sights. So my question is: am I correct in thinking that I need the adjustable sights model to be able to install the after market sights? Or can I also install them on the fixed sight version? I have not had the opportunity to handle the fixed-sight version.

the fixed sights are just one front sight and a grove cut into the topstrap for the rear. you dont need adjustable to do a swap. the front sight is changed out by a pin. i also perfer fixed sights and have the Meprolight on my SP101 and it works really well for me. good luck with your decision.

I'm not sure SP's come with adjustable sights except the new .22 and 4 inch models. But changing out the front isn't too terribly hard.

The front sight is retained by a pin. However, you'll need the right height front sight to make the zero correct. Both of the SP-101's I've owned have needed a little filing of the front sight to shot to point of aim.

The .327 version has an adjustable sight. The .357 in 3" does not :cuss: So now the choice is between the fixed sight in 3" or the adjustable sight in 4".

Just looking at the 4" version on Ruger's website, it looks like the front sight is a dovetail. Does anybody know if it's standard 3/8"?

The rear sight looks a little like the sight on the GP-100. Anybody have experience with this gun (4" SP101)?

I think the adjustable sights are for windage only. If that's the case you will have to adjust elevation by changing out the front or ammo choice. I'm not sure though. At any rate my fixed sight SP shoots to POA with 158 grain standard or plus P at 15 yards.

My 9 mm seems to shoot best with higher velocity 115 grain slugs. In most cases trying different ammo will show you what shoots to the sights best.
