I just got an email preview by Guns and Ammo.....of new gun models being introduced. One that intriuges me is the Ruger SP101 in 22mag. Looks to have about a 4" barrel and a full lug.....although no specs are shown.

Anyone care to speculate how many rounds it will hold? .....I'm hoping for 8 or so. Looks like a neat trail gun....and a reasonable SD gun for the recoil sensative.

I'm thinkin this would be a fun gun to own if it's priced fairly.

Just went back to my email and re-read it. The article says they are introducing a 22 MAG at 2012 SHOT show. The article is an email by Guns and Ammo and they had "eight new products for 2012" listed (but some have been out previously - like the Ruger 357 in SP101) .......so I too wonder about the validity.

I googled this model and found little other info to be had.....:what: makes me wonder if the info is legit???or if somebody at G&A is dreaming?

If true.....I think I'm going to put in an order for one with my dealer. Betcha these will be hot.

From the article:

Ruger has been on a tear lately, making their firearms in the models and calibers we want. The SP101 has always been a solid little revolver, but an all-steel .38 Special is not what we have all desired. Now you can have it in .357 Magnum, for those used to the recoil and muzzle blast. And for those looking for a camp gun with a little more oomph, you can have the compact SP101 in .22 Magnum. The only way I could see to improve it would be to offer an airweight frame, and for that, Ruger already has the superb LCR.

Be sure to check G&A magazine and G&A TV for tests and evaluations of these guns, and keep checking back throughout January for more new handguns from your favorite manufacturers.

Walkalong. You have had 35 yrs to get a High Standard in this configuration, no?
I reckin'. Never seen one.

I do have a Colt OMM that was a .22 LR converted to .22 Mag that I caught a great deal on. It is awesome. I would like a S&W 48, but folks are so proud of them these days.

Your right....they certainly did change it from 22 mag to 22 LR. :fire: That diminshes G&A and Patrick Sweeny's credibility as a gun scribe in my book. :cuss:

I had read a different article (gun blast....I think) where Ruger had left enough cylinder for the ability to one day offer the 22 mag in this gun.........maybe in another year or so?

Well, I founded my own self dis Smift & West'un 4" 651 dis fall, so I beez grinnin' like a possum chowing down on poop in a hair brush:

Phooey upon Rugaire fer misleading us!

Seriously... their recent 4" .22 LR SP-101 is neat - but my 3" 63 really shined in a comparison earlier this fall. Still - a .22 WMR version would have limited appeal - that's why S&W only makes so-chambered examples now in lite weight back-up guns. If they listened to me for marketing advice, they'd really go broke!

Sorry for my shameless plug of my neat find this fall... but I really like it!

Just buy the 22lr as there is no advantage to a 22mag in a short barreled revolver. you need the longer barrel of a rifle to get the speed.
Way to much unburned powder in the short barrel.
Ammo is expensive compared to 22lr. I know this from owning a ruger sa in 22mag.

Of course, there is a reason or two to shoot .22 WMR from a 4" revolver:

1. It's very loud.
2. It produces one heck of a muzzle and b/c flash!
3. They really do pick up some speed over a .22 LR from the same length barrel. They may offer decent protection from zombie ferrets.
4. The exclusivity of shooting ammo that runs $9+/50 even at WallyWorld.
5. Speaking of exclusive, see anyone else at the range shooting one?
6. Now, if you need more reasons, see 1. & 2. above.

Happy New Year!

Stainz, now well protected against zombie ferret attacks!

22 Mag Muzzle Blast

You want 22 Mag muzzle blast?Get an AMT Automag II if you can find an original(Irwindale,CA factory)and it will turn heads at the range.
Loudest thing imaginable-it comes from the unusual chamber design.

I happen to like the .22 mag cartridge and yep, this thing is alot of fun. I have very few problems with FTF or FTE with Remington ammo. It does get some attention at the range.

Can't say as I blame you. It looks sweet.

But mainly, it's just fun, although mine has a 6" barrel.

And yep, the zombie ferrets would be in serious trouble.

I got a S&W 317 in a trade months ago and initially I kicked myself for it. I had a gorgeous 629 with a pinned barrel, stamped sideplate and counterbored chambers, not to mention a slick action. I traded this beauty for a 3906 9mm and the 317. I love second and third generation S&W autos despite their weight, and I had no love for the 317, a snubnosed .22LR made of alloy.

To make a long story short, I've now fallen in love with the 317. I still miss the 629, but I just couldn't afford shooting it. It was brand new and it got a new home, though. I shoot the 3906 and it's good for practice. The 317 is in my bugout bag and is a backup for my Ruger Mark II standard.

Ruger makes fine guns, but they tend to be too heavy and blocky. I like their SP-101 .357, but I'd love to have it with a lightweight barrel. The Ruger .22 WRM version is gorgeous, but I wonder if it's going to be too heavy.

The S&W 317 holds ten rounds and really grew on me.

This is my Rossi 6-shot .22LR. It's a great gun, but I don't want
another .22 revolver that's anywhere near this heavy, even if it holds
ten rounds. Alloys are good enough to contain .22 pressures.

Although this is a .38 Spc., I like my barrels skinny, like my women. I wish
I could have a barrel like this on my SP-101. Ever since Ruger introduced
the Heavy-Barrel Security-Six, the barrels have gotten heavier and heavier!

there were several .22 mag,s made in the earier sp101,s. i have a .22 sp101 that was one number off a .22 mag. i,m not sure if the earier made mag,s were rechambered .22lr,s or not. eastbank.

I noticed that S&W is still making the Model 48 (22 Mag) as one of their classics.

You guys got me excited with the idea of a Ruger DA 22 Mag. But.... it was all for naught. Honestly, Ruger may come out with the 22 Mag version for the Shot Show and this may have been a "feeler". Remember Guns & Ammo are the ones that screwed up with their announcement of the current SP-101 in 22LR. Hence, I don't know what to believe.

There is five hours left on GB to get a High Standard Mk. 1V. Three inch with box, it looks mint. These are steel and well made. Rare in three inch and with a nice box. Its not hard to find because there is always only one page of HS revolvers.

I get the impression that Patrick Sweeny "spilled the beans" before Ruger was ready to let the information out about the 22 magnum. After all, when is the 2012 Shot show? The SP101 in 22lr has already been released. Old news now.

Don't count on it at SHOT. :)
Your impression may not be correct.
