Ruger SP101: CC Experience

Suspenders would probably be a good idea, since, like Hank Hill, I have no ***.

Easy fix for that: Go to the gym. Do squats and deadlifts. In a few months, you won't be able to say that, but you might have to buy pants with a bit more room in the seat.

I had a 2.25" SP101 that I used to carry in a Blackhawk Pocket Holster #3
A good belt didn't allow my pants to sag.
And you could NOT tell it was in my pocket.

Only reason I sold it, was a friend was willing to let a blue 3" GP100 go.
(they don't make those any more - they still make the SP101)

I have both an SP101 3" in 357 and an LCR in 357. The LCR used to be my primary carry but now it's mostly the LCR. Backwoods leather in Portsmouth makes some awesome holsters for the SP101. That plus a good belt and you'll forget it's on.

A few years ago, I got an SP101 to replace a G26 as my CCW. It wasn't a PITA or anything, but it was fairly noticable, and I had to crank my belt down a bit more. Also I was often feeling paranoid that I was printing, and just couldn't ever get really comfortable with it.
I finally got a little S&W Airweight and a pocket holster, and never looked back.
But, as chance would have it, I'm currently hunting deals on some nicer wood grips for the Ruger, and if that happens, I'm sure I'll put it back in the rotation :D.

3 inch sp101, simply rugged silver dollar pancake. I am 6 ft 175 lb, and it is an excellent carry gun for me. The snub carries very well too.

Just get a good belt and holster and you can carry just about anything lol.

Good belt and holster.
I carry a 3" SP101 in a Simply Rugged Silver Dollar Pancake. I even sometimes pocket carry it in a Simply Rugged Pocket Pro. I'll admit that my 2" S&W M38 sees more pocket carry though.

I carry a 2.25" SP101 in a Simply Rugged Silver Dollar Pancake. The holster has loop straps and was ordered for a Smith model 60 3". It can be worn IWB,OWB or crossdraw. I also carry an LCR .38 spl in a pocket holster. I am 6.0' and 260' with an overhang. An Amish gunbelt and Wallyworld clipon suspenders complete the ensemble. Very comfy.

love my 3inch sp101 for hiking. Cheap uncle mikes IWB.

Wrong answer. Cheap holsters fail at the worst times.

I had my GP100 in a cheap uncle mikes. (The only kind they sell.) I stepped out of my truck to go into a store and suddenly noticed my holster and gun were now in my pocket. Lucky I had my cargo pants on with huge pockets otherwise the gun would have been on the ground for everybody to see.

The uncle mikes holster loops, made of cheap plastic, broke.

I should know better than to invest hundreds, sometimes thousands, into a sidearm, then stick it in a $7 holster.

Always go with quality in belts and holsters. JMO

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I'd be interested to know from tomrkba what rig he uses to carry the GP100. I've thought that it would make a good carry weapon and I would be keen to know what his experience might be.

1) Comp-Tac kydex reinforced belt 1 1/2" wide.
2) Milt Sparks Versa Max 2 modified for additional forward cant.
3) One Safariland #371 holder with a Comp II speed loader in front of the holster and three Comp II's in #371 holders on the other side in the appendix position.

The stocks are the primary problem. The rubber Hogues cause chaffing above the kidney where the end flares out. They are a bit too long to easily hide. It needs quality wood stocks for better concealment.

If you think the GP100 is big, try a Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan! It carries well in the appendix position (except for the long grips--it needs Badger boot grips too).

I often carry a S&W 442 in my right front pocket and a 2.25" spur-less SP101 on my left hip at about 10 o' clock IWB in a Crossbreed Supertuck. I like being able to draw with either hand.

With my frame, the SP101 is only concealable on the belt when I have a guayabera style overshirt. I can conceal my GP101 IWB or OWB that way as well but it is less comfortable.

I carry a 3" SP 101 in a Milt Sparks Versa Max II. I have probably more "unhappy with" holsters for the 101 than any handgun I own. The Sparks VMII has now been with me for over 3 years and the only complaint I have about it is I didn't buy it 6 or 7 holsters ago. There's no snag, rides comfortable, and stays in the same place. Tom covered it well in his posts.

Are those Badger or Gemini stocks?

Those are Gemini stocks! (Cocobolo boot grip)
Gemini used to work with Badger (installed his grips on several of their models) but now make their own.
I've had bad luck with Badger's grips chipping (laminated wood) at the backstrap, due to the shock of 357 magnum rounds.

Thanks for asking!
