I walked into the gun store last weekend to buy a a Ruger LCP for an additional pocket carry gun, to my surprise they had both the LCP and the new LC380. I asked to see both and while I was comparing them when I looked over to the 45 section on the wall and I couldn't believe my eyes a SR1911 cmd. Well long story short I came home with no LCP and a new 1911. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet but I'm going out tomorrow.

Sounds like you scored a winner! A picture would be nice ...

I've pretty much given up on finding an SR1911 of ANY kind. I'm thinking that Ruger really only made about a dozen.:cuss:

What sort of magic gun store do you have? The only thing missing from your story was "and they had a shelf full of S&W Shields in 9mm..."

Greentop in Richmond has Ruger SR1911 in GI and Commander size...they also have Shields....

The SR1911s are going for $799 though....about $100 overpriced imo

I got mine at Sportsman's warehouse in Mesa AZ for $699. They said that this was the first time they got commanders but they usually have the the full sized Ruger in stock.

They have them here for $699. I was debating between a full size Ruger or Remington for the same price or a Kimber for another 100 bucks(not stainless though). The Ruger looked nice but I ended up going with the Remington in stainless. More what I was looking for but I sure would take the Ruger. Maybe sometime ha ha

So is the Ruger 1911 a spec 1911, meaning, can you swap other GI 1911 parts into it? Or is there some or all of it that is proprietary or Ruger design?

I suppose you can say it's about as 'spec' as any other 1911. AFAIK there's not much on any 1911 that is 'drop in.' Everything needs some amount of hand fitting.

I had begun feeling the same way, especially since I had myself put on a waiting list when they first came out. That was a long time ago and still have never seen one at the LGS. However, the other day, I stopped at another place I frequent way too much and low and behold, they had both the standard and the commander model! He even said the computer claims they have five of the Commanders but even he didn't believe that. The two in the display were both $707. I am so tempted to just put it on the card, and the wife even suggested I do so. Unfortunately, sense prevailed. I hate when that happens.

I still might one of these days pick up one of the Ruger 1911's but for right now I'm looking at picking up a compact. I'm not a huge fan of Ruger but it's personal thing more than anything else, but the SR1911 has some pretty nice attributes given it's price point. The one thing that I will NOT do is pay more than MSRP just so I can say I have one.
