I'd get one for the sheer novelty of it and to learn about the gun. Whether I'd rely on it, it's irrelevant for me.

As to the OP, mine has seen couple thousand rounds down the tube. No problems so far. I will clean it one day.

What the SR556 sales for is in the $1500 range.
I just found an Ruger SR-556 E-Model for $1050 local. Hmmmmmm

$1050 is better but the non-chrome-lined barrel is a deal killer for me. Even $700 ARs have chrome lined barrels.

If you prefer a piston setup, I would look at the Adams Arms options - they seem to get very good reviews and don't cost all that much. Absent the preference, the DI options are less money and excellent quality.

I had my SR556 for just over 72 hours. Thankfully I found someone who wanted it bad enough that it did not cost much to own. My piston driven Bushmaster just "felt" better to me. Might be because it is what I was used to, don't know but there was just a feeling of something not right.

***** UPDATE ***** I purchased my 1st AR platform rifle. Rock River Arms LAR-15 Tactical Operator 2. Comes with (2) 30 round mags and is well dressed from the factory. Jumped on a case of ammo (on sale) and Vortex Strike Fire red/green dot 2x doubler and night vision compatible switch. Out the door for just over $1400 including tax. Warning! this was an unauthorized male purchase so I will have to hide it and put it under the tree in 29 days.

:D Good luck with that.

Congrats on the purchase though, let us know how it runs for you.

the standard comes with:
hogue handgrip
troy industries flip up sights
4 rail handguard
rail covers

the E model only has a 1913 rail on top, standard A2 handgrip, and no flip sights...never priced everything out but that's just the difference I see from pictures.

is chrome really that big of deal? when will you be running solid salt shot through your barrel underwater on full auto?

Nice!

Are you going to modify it?

Photos or it didn't happen.

Merry Christmas to ME!

Santa was good to Santa this year. Pushed a couple hundred rounds of Federal thru my RRA LAR-15 this weekend. A whole bunch of feel good!

The two-stage piston driven operating system is a plus over the gas driven.
Many people say this, but honestly it is quite debatable. Whatever advantages it does offer may be considered off-set by the greater weight and complexity of the piston system. IMO, its a wash with neither system being definitively better.

Also they declare it to be both 5.56mm NATO/.223 Rem compatible. <--- any thoughts on that?
Any gun properly chambered for 5.56mm will shoot .223 safely (which most AR's are). Its the other way around you need to worry about.

Why is the Standard Model $1995 and the E-Model only $1375? I don't see the $600 dollar difference.
The name-brand extras on the Standard model add a lot to the cost, and many of them appear to be missing or replaced with cheaper components on the E-Model. The sights alone would set you back around $200 if you bought them separately. Its quite possible there are other, internal, changes which are not called out in the very limited spec listing on the website (ex. the bolt looks different between the two guns in the photos).

Why are the 3 stand alone uppers more expensive than the complete E-Model rifle?
They appear to be based on the Standard model upper, so in effect they should be looked at as $500 cheaper than that rifle, rather than $100 more expensive than the E-Model. ;)

This is a case of them saying this as if it was their idea and they have the exclusive on it, which is not at all true.

So, Ruger is the one and only manufacturer that does this? Wrong.
All manufacturers that have a .556/.223 chambered rifle stamp it
on the rifle. If you don't like Rugers, say so, don't come up with
some lame put down. It's unbecoming.

What the SR556 sales for is in the $1500 range.

That is the same price as a Noveske light basic. I would much rather own the Noveke. Also for that money one could get a more expensive noveske upper, something like the light low pro and put it on a lower of their choice.

Why anyone would buy a Ruger over a noveske is beyond me.

it's obvious you don't know much about AR15's if you don't know about 5.56 and 223 differences in rifles...

He probably doesn't, that's why he joined a forum where the
NRA Life Member expert could explain it to him. It's no
crime to be inexperienced.

I just saw where buds gun shop has them for $985. At this price I'm really considering this for my first semi auto rifle. In this price range colt, bcm, and Daniel defense are out, so I may just go for it. Seems like a fair price, correct me Im wrong please.
I want trying to thread jack, this is just where thr search engine took me.

I have a Ruger 556 and I love it! Shoots very well, is extrememly accurate and of high quility. Mine has over 2000 rounds through it now and there is no sign of wear any place on the gun.

I like buying all American made products anytime I can. It helps keep my friends employed rather than folks in other countries. Over the years I have owned over 100 Rugers and only had a minor problem with one. Sent it to the factory when it was over 5 years old, had it back, working perfectly in 1 1/2 weeks......no charge.

I wanna see a piston gun go through this:

if it can last for significantly longer without self destructing I would go for it. In other words would a piston unit save your butt in a Wannat type situation. If it would and not decrease accuracy I would be all in.
