I think I have my Ruger SR-556 set up the way I want it now. So I figured I'd share some pics.

As it came, right out of the box, a week and a half ago.

RugerSR556002.gif

Troy folding battle sights, Troy Quad rail, Troy rail covers (3), Hogue grip, flash hider, M4 style six position stock, three 30 round Magpul mags, and the four position gas piston system.

30 rounds fired standing, offhand at 25 yards using the Troy battle sights as they came from the factory:

I mounted a Leupold 3-9X40mm VX1 and fired a three shot, 1 1/2" group at 100 yards. I'm not a very good rifle shooter and I think it's capable of better groups.

Now the SR-556 is set up with a BSA electronic red dot reflex sight, dual mount sling mount for my Tactical Tailor single point CWB sling, Streamlight TLR-1 LED light, and a Ruger folding forward mount vertical grip (holds extra CR123 batteries for the light and an extra flat battery for the BSA red dot).

I think I'm all set...for zombies.

Looks very cool. I am glad to see they are making their way out there. I believe there were some folks here stating it would be months or years before we would see them.

Have fun with your new rifle.....

Matt

i got to play with one today. not bad at all for Ruger's first AR. The troy rail is a bit heavy, but it's good stuff. The piston is a bit heavy as well and combined it will probably feel normal to traditional ruger owners. :)

The FS they chose is a bit long too, but nbd. The pmags are a nice touch. their warranty will probably help them as well.

Cool. I hadn't realized that any were actually in public hands yet.

If you don't mind me asking, what did it cost and where did you buy it?

You do realize that it's a crime to put a $50 BSA fake-holosight on that rifle, right?

Oh, and the Ruger folding foregrip looks suspiciously like a CAA folding foregrip...

I'm almost tempted to sell my LMT Defender AR-15 for an SR556. Almost.

Everyone has their preferences on sights. Personally, I would choose a Trijicon sight on my rifle before I would choose an Aimpoint or EOTech sight.

I hate batteries.

Trijicon makes more than the ACOG including reflex sights and variable magnification scopes. Most of their models don't require batteries.

I put a ACOG TA33-8 on my AR-15.

I recommend looking into a Trijicon RX30-11 or RX30-12. They cost around $425 and do not require batteries.

nwilliams, you have a habit of leaving the gun store with new, flashy guns. It's only a matter of time before we see professionally-done pics of your new SR-556 and make me jealous. ;)

While I agree that ACOGs are great, an Aimpoint will last you about 6 or 7 years on a single battery.

True, but Aimpoints don't offer bullet drop compensation and rangefinding out to 600 meters like an ACOG does. However, an Aimpoint is more appropriate if short-distance is more important.

It's just a matter of finding a gun store that has one:D

I had one in my hand the other day at a LGS & they a very nice.

Enjoy your new gun.

Someone asked about price. This shop was asking $2000.00 But keep in mind I consider this shop to be very over priced in thier tactical rifles & pretty much everything else that is not on sale.

I will go out on a whim and say this might be the best configured AR on the market considering it is the only configuration you can get from Ruger.

It might seem dumb but the thing that sold me on this Ruger was that it comes with 3, thats right 3 mags. And they are PMags to boot. This gun trade industry has suffered greatly in the realm of available mags and especially how many mags come with guns. Sig has opted to not even try anymore and just include one only for all their offerings. SW ARs you only get one. RRA one. DPMS at lease will respect you with 2. I can appreciate a company trying to make money off accessories and all that jazz but I really appreciate it when a company will will give you all you need in one neat package like the SR comes with.

Basically you have: AR Rifle, Gas Piston, Flat Top, Quad Rail, Front and Rear Sights, and 3 MagPul PMags, I think that this rifle is a no brainer at the price it is selling for (which is around 1550-1650).

It will probably set a precedent with other makers to start employing these options as standard in the future.

so 45 bucks worth of Mags sold you on the rifle?

I am more worried about the Proprietary BCG, front heavy design, Crappy FH, etc.

Don't get me wrong this is not a bad gun. However I think there are a few things that need to be checked out first. I almost got one the other day but decided there are to many unknowns at this point.

BLASPHEMER!!!

The only rifle I'd trade my LMT for would be a Nove, and I might turn down that trade simply due to the attachment I have to this M4.

I'm starting to warm up to the SR, ever-so-slowly. I've always been a fan of GP design, although I speak softly of it on sites like this.

The previous thread had a post, with a link to a site where this rifle was being sold for just under $1,390, and when I saw that price, I have to admit, I realized that I'll own a GP AR yet. But like Azizza says, I'm going to wait for the unknowns to become known first. I'm in no hurry... sorta.

Does anyone even know how much of this gun is being machined in house by Ruger?

Nice, and decent price. I hope that it lives up to everyones hopes and more. Bring some more good attention to Ruger, they need all they can get. Ive always been a Ruger fan, I own a few.

Honestly, yeah. It is kind of a principle thing. Everyone else offers 1, Ruger offers 3. I could really care less that they are MagPul but that does sweeten the deal. So really I am sold on this rilfe for probablymore like 30 bucks worth of mags.

It is true it is not ideal but what you get for what you pay seems at the very least fair. A RRA one configured like this would surely be more. The Colt LE carbine is close to this configuration without the piston for the same price. It is true though, I am not entirely sold on the gas piston on ARs but it is competitively priced for that market.

I hear ya. The most expensive AR I own cost me over $1,800 and all I got was a single USGI mag with it. No hard case, no front sling swivel, no cleaning kit. Like you said, maybe other companies will start 'completing' the package, but know that it will all be tucked into the price as well.
