Ruger SRH .44 getting the boot otherwise!

Dear THR:
The SRH has been doing nothing except sitting idle in my safe collecting dust. It was not meant to do that when I bought it. The time has come that (and I am quite free these days) to take the sucker out to woods and knock down some boars and what not- may be even a deer or two.

It has a scope but I hate eye reliefs on the handguns. It makes the angle of my arm weird and uncomfortable. So I will take the scope off! AND take to the beast up close and deadly! Otherwise, its going to get the boot.

How many of you SRH .44 guys use it for the hunt and what do you hunt with it? Also are you using scope or the just the iron?

I don't shoot a SRH but I do shoot a SBH with iron sights I have hunted deer and pigs with it and I have taken a few with it. Shot placement is key same as with a bow keep your distance to reasonable Bow range and it will do its part. I'm very parochial to a Cast Boolit I cast and load my own so shooting it now is as cheep as shooting a 22.
If I need to extend my range I break out my scoped Contenders and Encores.

Irons out to 50yds no prob. Hate scopes on handguns as well but my eyes are so bad I can't see the front sight most of the time. Just put a scope on a lever gun but won't put one on my SRH.

I shoot a Blackhawk with hot loads but only have shot a SRH at the range once. Big difference. The Redhawk really smacked my hand. It doesn't roll up in your hand like a single action does.

Use it on single action when hunting. A double-action trigger will make you pull to your strong side. Otherwise, it's just hunting.

The make scopes these days that have long eye relief. The Nikon EER series is over 36".

I have gone to dot sight since these are what ever you want and are quicker. Beside you don't need your near vision to see the sights.

I have a SBH Bisley hunter and use it with irons only out to 40-50 yards which is where I see deer 99% of th time. I had a red dot on it at one time but I ended up moving it to my 22/45.

Irons all the way!

SBH here also. Have shot the SRH several times. I like it. I'm just more of a single action fan. But nothing in the world wrong with it. I swapped my irons for a set of ghost ring sights. Really like them. Took my range to about 70 yards as opposed to 45-50 with my irons. I considered a scope at first, but during a charge, or without a rest, the scope is "almost" worthless to me.

I hunt with a SRH .44 Mag. that has a one power red dot scope on it which elimenates the eye relief problem. Deer to 100-150 yards no problem !

I like my hunting pistols with a scope. A contender looks naked without a scope.

I don't have a .44 mag, just commenting on optics. Personal thing, but if your eyes are getting old, scopes sure start looking better on handguns. I like a little magnification. I have a couple of 2x LERs. I don't like electronics on a scope and I don't need it to be that fast as I'm NEVER going to fire a handgun off hand at game, only from a supported position or over a good rest. Hunting does not resemble an IPSC match.

I have the same gun you picture and have killed mule deer and cow elk out to 90 yards with open sights. Love this gun with hot Buffalo Bore hunting loads. If you do your part, it'll turn lights out on the quick.

I have a SRH in 480 Ruger with a Leupold 2x EER scope. It works for me for deer hunting. Figure I can take just about any game in North America with it. However, I like my BFR in 475/480 better for shooting.

Scopes take some getting used to on handguns. You might consider a red dot.

Not as much anymore, but I used to take the SRH out bunny hunting with light loads. That and the S&W 686 has taken the majority of my rabbits over the years. Only time it was scoped was when I took it out deer hunting a few times but never got a decent shot to take.

My SRH was going to be my deer hunting firearm this year. I took two with my SBH last year using the factory irons & just wanted to try something different. You know how it is At any rate, I did OK with the irons on the SRH, but decided to mount a red dot for grins. The red dot was certainly an improvement, but....it made an already large weapon just too cumbersome for me to deal with. I took the red dot off and mounted a Hi Viz front sight...now we are talking! I shoot the gun better with the Hi Viz front than I did with the red dot...and can use my regular holster which is a huge bonus for me.

The bad news is that I have had no time to hunt this year...have not set foot in the woods. Oh well, maybe next year. I still have deer in the freezer from last year.
