At one time (1980) I did quite a lot of hunting with a scoped 10" T/C Contender. I remember packing it in a T/C nylon holster that held it somewhat vertical or slightly diagonal across my chest. But I do remember having to pull up pretty high to draw the weapon. It was a comfortable setup. Fast forward to 2006. I am working on a Ruger SRH in 454. So far it has the Wegand scope base and a three ring set plus a Burris 2x posilock EER scope. Last week I ordered a Micheals of Oregon bandolier type holster for it. Holster came in Friday and while I could probably hunt with it I am not really pleased with how it fits and rides.
I was hoping a cross draw shoulder holster might be my answer to packing this big revolver. While looking for a better shoulder rig I came across this holster;

It looks like and is made a lot more like the CCW holster that I carry. I pack a Glock in a Kramer horsehide belt scabbard on a renforced Galco gun belt every day. My CCW rig is so comfortable I often forget it is there. What do you handgun hunters think of this design?

Riddle (Mikey isn't it) - my answer to hunting carry was this ''Soft Armor'' by Mil-Tech. Give them a call - I was dealt with by a very pleasant lady to whom I described what I wanted to contain!

Call them - (800) 346 4545.

This suits my 2 SHR's - my BFR and - Scoped Raging Bull - all work in that. It can be set up to sit higher of course and I usually do that.

Thanks for the reply

That is pretty much the exact same holster setup I bought from Cabelas, made by Micheals of Oregon. I had to add the around the body strap myself, however. Like I said, I could hunt with it but walking around the woods some this weekend and climbing a little showed me that it is a somewhat bulky setup. I rig mine so the around the body strap goes just under my pecs. I can carry under my weak side arm or shift the holster around front but just sliding it around. I guess it is the over the shoulder strap that keeps bugging me. I have worn X style harness shoulder holsters before and thought they were pretty comfortable once you get them adjusted.I found this one that I thought looked very comfortable;

However, I find myself wondering how high you would have to lift your arm to draw and 7.5" revolver from such a rig. I have got a lot of belly for a belt mounted crossdraw but I am wondering if a belt mounted crosdraw with a set of all leather suspenders might be an option.

Well - in use my best position seemed to be similar to what you described. The gun butt was approx over my left nipple and draw was not for me too awkward at all. It solved another problem too being up there - in as much as in PA we are meant to have a hunting revo open carry - so this gave good exposure to the gun without (for me) feeling too awkward as I walked and moved around.

Body build etc is a major factor with choices but this rig for me pretty much does it - I am comfortable with it - and of course - well, IMO - draw speed is hardly critical as with say a carry rig as I use daily.

Hope you find a suitable solution :)
