I recently purchased a Russian SKS for $400.00. I was hoping it was worth the price. After reading other threads I'm beginning to wonder. It is in mint condition. All parts stamped and matching including bayonet, sling and cleaning kit. Wood stock is in outstanding condition. I almost 100% sure it has never been fired before. Nothing has been altered. Was this a good deal???

Pictures really help as do marking info. Is it dated on the receiver cover? A 1949 at $400 would be a steal.

I don't worry a lot about whether I get the absolute "best" deal.

I figure maybe I simply bought something at next month's price.

As an FYI, the r (cyrillic character for g) is for goda, which means year.

Help Me!

I also own a "Swan" SKS, purchased within days of reading a newsmagazine article about how some crazy gun dealer in Vermont had taken delivery from the Russians of a Boeing 747 full of rifles. I think this was in '93.

The polish and blue finish quality of this rifle are very high for an arsenal weapon. The bolt carrier is as good as anything made here. Markings were highlighted with a gold wash that has disappeared with time. I would not be surprised to learn that this was some sort of ceremonial/honor guard rifle.

It is marked "CCCP272xx" at the right-rear of the receiver. Numerous parts and the stock are marked with the characters "K", followed by what appears to be an inverted, lower-case "g" and the digits "3868". The left receiver side shows the previously mentioned, Tula arsenal star. There are numerous, additional inspection/proof marks. It lacks the arrow/year markings mentioned in a prior post.

Apologies, but my imaging software cannot be "dumbed down" to provide a photo.

I also paid twice the then-current price of $69 for a Chinese SKS. If the current value is from $300 to $400, y'all are makin' me feel good about keeping it! :D

Can anyone provide a good guess regarding year or period of manufacture?

Some Russians are worth a lot others are not, some are just over-priced. Sounds like your's is probably worth what you paid for it. I wouldn't have any buyer's remorse if I were you, sounds like you got a very nice rifle and you're happy with it.

I see many ok condition Arsenal-refinished ones selling in the neighborhood of $350. They are usually easy to spot because the bolt is blackened and they are stamped with a box with a line through it under the date.

I paid $375 for mine a few years ago, its all matching numbers (including the stock), unfired and not an arsenal-refinish. Its also marked with a "1" on the front sight which apparently indicates "sniper" quality according to this site.....

And here's another reference to it...

I got lucky when I stumbled across it and didn't hesitate for a second to purchase it for my collection.

I bought my Russian SKS all-matching for $330 + shipping last October. It is a little bit dinged up and I had to file down the gas tube lever to get it to hold down after my first range session, but I am happy with it. It's a "#2" on the sight.
