Rust on Smith & Wesson

ok here's the deal. i just aquired a new smith and wesson 5946. it has been in storage in a contaier right next to the ocean. ( literally )

i noticed that there is a little rust starting to appear on the gun in various places. my question is, what can i use to take the rust off? i was going to use flitz, but i cannot have any kind of shine on the gun b/c it is used for law enforcement.

basically my question is, what can i use to take rust off a gun and not leave a shine on the gun.

Just use a GOOD gun oil and some 000 steel wool. Don't use anything heavier than 000 because you might leave scratches.

just actual gun oil will take it off? hhmmm..... i didnt know that. thanks, i'll try it.

by the way, do you recommend any good oil and solvents i can use to clean the gun with?

100% copper scrub pad works well also.

Use oil and bronze wool(find at good marine or hardware store). Two reasons for bronze wool.
1. It won't scratch the steel and it won't remove blueing unless you really work at it.
2. Steel wool can leave minute particles of steel in the pores of the metal. These particles can be a cause of new rust appearing.

If it's just light surface rust first try a pencil erasure. That won't remove any blueing and is very mildly abrasive. If a pencil erasure won't cut it then move to an ink erasure which will remove rust that's just started cutting. If it's deeper than that then go with 0000 steel wool coated with oil and rub lightly.
After removing the rust then cold blue the spots and keep it well oiled.

Phone S&W, they can blast it for you, it'll look like new.

Not too expensive either.

I have a 5906, you'll want to take off the grips and look for any rust under the grips, it will be dark/black if it is there. If you have Novak sights on it you'll want to see if there is any surface rust on them too.
