Rust removal / treatment?

I have a Colt Compact that I have carried daily for a year or more and just today I noticed some minor surface rust on the front strap. The gun has the original park finish and I was wondering if I can "treat" the area to remove the rust or am I just gonna have to live with the stain?

Btw.... I wipe down and field strip the gun every week, so the rust is very minor. Also I plan on checkering the front strap and haveing it refinished by the end of the year. I haven't checker and refinished this gun yet due to the fact it is the 4th project gun in line.

Anyway...... Am I stuck with the stain for the next couple of months or what?

If you can't get the stain off with Hoppes #9 solvent & cleaning patches you are stuck with it.

The park finish is porous, and anything harsh enough to remove rust will also remove or change the texture of the park finish.

It might be overkill for such a small spot, but check out electrolytic rust removal. It can be easily accomplished with common household items.

I am doing that same thing (rust removal) now on some guns damaged in a house fire. The system DOES work!!!

Problem solved, I traded it for a NIB S&W 637 airweight!

Thats one way to do it. I use 0000 steel wool and some gun oil to get light surface rust off guns.
