Rusted Uniflow powder measure

Hey folks I appreciate your help on my previous posts. I need help with one more. I recently acquired a Uniflow powder measure for free but it's a bit rusted and nobody wants rust in the powder. I have attached some pics for reference. What is it I could use to remove this and keep the measure smooth?

That's not bad at all! Your title had me worried.

Start with steel wool, (no added oil, there's already some on the wool), and scrub the rust. Wipe the loose stuff off, and apply a wax to ever metal surface. Buff the wax off, and you're ready to run a pound of powder through to condition it.

We don't oil powder measures to prevent rust because the oil is a contaminant to the powder. If you could apply a small enough quantity of oil, it'd be ok, but wax is easier to apply in very small quantities because you buff the excess off. Furniture wax or car wax will work fine.

Sorry to scare you lol I appreciate the quick response. So like a car carnuba wax liquid would work?

Yes, any conventional wax (carnuba, bee's, etc) will work; the trick (with all wax, in any application) is to cover the surface, let it set, and buff it back. That'll leave the smallest bit worked well into the surface, which is exactly what you want.
 
Just soak all the rusted parts in mineral spirits and gently remove any rust with a brass brush. I dont use anything but graphite on a powder dispenser, which is also in the powder so you cannot contaminate anything.
 
I have an RCBS powder measure that I found at a garage sale in Wisconsin (Rust Belt) that I got cheap. $5.00. It was pretty rusty and much, much worse than the OP's. I submerged it in vinegar for a day . Gave it a going over with a Chore Boy (copper) scouring pad and rinsed with water. Looked like new with minimal effort. Light coat of wax when it dried. I bought it for the powder reservoir and cap, decided to use it after it came out so nice.
 
Interesting thread, I noticed some rust on the outside of the inserted barrel on the RCBS powder measure a year of so ago.

Think that I used some gun oil with Bronze wool. Guess I made a mistake. Will check it later today
 
Not too terrible.
I picked one up worse than that, cleaned it up and it runs great.
I was using it last night.

All of the above advice is solid.

The only thing I can add...
I used Frog Lube Paste instead of wax.
It dries and is buffed the same as wax.
Makes for a protected and slick finish as well.

Pick up some graphite as mentioned above.
It can be a bit messy, but works great.
 
Rusted? What? mine looks just like that and works perfectly. What others tell you is great for a restoration project that will make it look new. You might as well get some touch up paint at the same time for the exterior.
Do you know that parts are available for your powder measure? The plastic powder bin is also available from RCBS.

Is the wax necessary? Won’t graphite (and then powder of course while using it) work fine on its own to repel rust?
It's a fair question. Graphite does nothing to prevent rust. . . it's a granular lubricant. Oil, in a small enough amount, would be fine but it's nearly impossible to apply little enough. Wax is easier to apply in a small but effective quantity. FrogLube (expensive coconut oil) works too, provided you wipe it off.
 
When I got mine, a dual inner drum. The outside had some rust as well as the metering "screw" I used a wire wheel on a drill and cleaned the out side. Some fine steel wool on the inside and the cylinders and done. Heck you can clean the out side and spray paint it. Wax?? Why?

Doesn’t look bad at all. Evaporust will remove all the rust with a good soaking. Yours may not need much of anything at all.
If it was bad this would be the way. The product cost seem prohibitive based on the very small amount of rust.

If you absolutely need to treat the surface just cold blue it.

Got it free and it works as good as ever...

Yes I did ....sort of the RCBS Advanced stand ... made about ten years before theirs came out...

All aluminum except for the 7/8 -14 but and 1/4" bolts . ... sides are "Stop sign" ....the truss are thick wall aluminum tubing threaded 1/4" on each end . ... Aluminum heavy angle for the base ..... 3 - 4 hours total .... No plans just drawed up in my head ...

Made so the micrometer stem passes through and the hole in the rotary is only exposed to the powder on the up swing ....
