I have a nice Redding Saeco 4 Cav bullet mold which has some rust on the bottom and one of the insides of the blocks down low. None of the rust is actually in the bullet cavities. The only way I can think of to get rid of the rust is to use the fine green Scotch Brite scrubbing clothes and WD-40.

Before I try anything I thought I should check here and see what the genreral opinon was.

Thanks

NO-NO-NO-NO do not use the scotch brite. Go to the hardware store and buy one of those little brass brushes that look like a toothbrush. Use that and get your mold hot. If all you have is surface rust, this will take it out. Then oil it well with a good gun oil,

I agree to 'no' on the Scotchbrite.

On the outside, you only have to be careful of the top & bottom of the sprue plate.

You can can cast a couple, then coat them with toothpaste then run a wood screw into the center of the base. Then place the bullet in the mould, close it and chuck the exposed end of the screw in a hand drill and give a little low speed spinning. Just a few seconds. Clean it up and take a look.

For the faces of the mould with the cavities a brass wire brush can do no harm.

Have fun.

THe scotch-brite cloths I'm talking about are made out of some sort of non metallic fiber. I don't think they would hurt the iron that the mopld is made out of. I don't hjave any rust in the actual cavities of the mold, thank God, so I don't have that to worry about.

Guess I'll give the brass brush a go and heat it up good.

Thanks.

The problem isn't the fiber, but rather the abrasive that is imbedded in the fiber. It's much harder than the mould and will scratch it.

Ahhh!!! The light comes on. :) I get it now. This is why I wrote to the board efore doing anything. Very glad I did. Would have hated to really mess up the mold.

Thanks everyone. Much appreciated.
