BigBL87, I have to say that if you think Ruth Bader Ginsburg was far left, you are mistaken. Far left compared to Wayne LaPierre, that man of peculiar renown, maybe. But not in reality, IMO.

Monac...There’s lots of important issues and implications of Justice Ginsburg’s passing we could discuss. However, currently we’re on THR, a GUN focused website. ...hence the focus on the topic at hand. You feel free to branch out however and watch how quick the mods come in...

That is a good point, Frulk, and I see that Ironicaintit has made it as well. I thought I did make a point about gun rights, so we shall see.

PS - I think Notary, above, needs to have your point made to him as well.

She may not have been far left by today's political standard (which has shifted), but her voting record by Martin-Quinn Score was the 2nd farthest left of the current court. The only justice with a farther left record is Sotomayor.

Oh, I get that. The difference is, the Republicans controlled the Senate then as an opposing party to the president. I'm not aware of any real procedural roadblocks the Democrats could effectively throw up to stall for as long as they'd need to. Their best bet would be to put political pressure on Romney and/or Collins. Murkowski already said she won't vote to confirm prior to inauguration, but still requires 3 more defections which means Romney, Collins, and one more.

I wasn't a huge fan of it when they did it even though I prefer Gorsuch over Garland because I thought it was a manipulation of the system. I didn't like the precedent that it set. That being said, I'd be surprised if they actually followed their own standard, and I believe McConnell already said they will vote on an appointment.
I agree, but I also know the Democrats are going to pull out all the stops to return the favor. They may or may not be able to succeed but they are going call in ever marker they have out to try to block Trump and the Republicans in filling her seat before the election. Given the current political climate how much more social unrest and damage will that fight create?

I didn't agree with much of her politics but I admired her tenacity especially in the way she persevered through many health related hardships. She lived 11 years with pancreatic cancer, not many have managed that feat. I can (and I think many could) disagree vehemently with a person and still respect them.

Justice sworn in on Thanksgiving would be nice.

Bless her heart, she fought hard and long to try to outlast Trump. She was realistically 4 months away from retirement. Whether you agree with her positions or not you have to admit her will to live and her will to fight for what she believes in was quite strong, and for that she gets my respect.

Trump has to be careful with the timing. If he gets a replacement nominated and confirmed before the election (resulting in a 6-3 conservative Court), that would actually remove an incentive that some conservatives have for voting for him.

Sure, BigBL87. I don't doubt that for a second. But it only put her to the left relative to the rest of the Supreme Court. How many of them are Bush/Bush/Trump appointees? Do you think that made her "far left"? The American right has come to regard centrists, or anyone who is not right wing, as "far left". I would suggest this is not a good idea.

Confirmation hearings are sure to be a **** show, now or after the election. I just hope they get it done now, because after the election it goes up by an order of magnitude...

Republican defections from a quick confirmation include Collins, Murkowski, and Romney. If Kelly beats McSally in Arizona (almost a foregone conclusion), he takes his seat immediately (it's a special election). That brings the GOP senators down to 49, one short of what's needed to confirm.

That, honestly, gives McConnell more reason to try to get it done before the election which he may do with that in mind.
