S-A XD 40 Ported

I saw one of these at the local gun store and was wondering if anyone has experience with the ported model XD. I've never had a ported or comped gun before and was wondering about the pro's/con's etc.

It will mostly be used as a range gun. My Ruger P89 pulls nightstand duty. The only gun I feel 100% with except my Moss. 500 and Ruger M77, both not to good for keeping in the nightstand (No kids, just the wife and me).

The biggest downside to a ported pistol is the muzzle flash at night and they're really loud!!!

If it's gonna be a range queen I don't think there is a problem... however I have an XD 40 nonported and it's recoil is more than controlable...

XD40 Service model here, non ported. Recoil is not an issue to me. My wife can shoot it comfortably as well. I don't like shooting ported shotguns on the skeet range because many of my league competitions are at night and the muzzle blast does mess with your eyes.

Interesting. I am not recoil sensitive, but it just so happened that the dealer had the ported model. It looks realy sweet. I have ner had a ported gun and thought that it would be something a little different.

About the night thing. I've heard yea and nea about messing with you "night vision." I have shot revolvers around dusk that had huge cones of fire blasting out of the end that were noticable and quite impressive, but it didn't affect vision. Hmmm. Honey, I need to buy this gun to do some scientific experimenting with...

About the only negative thing I've heard is that the front sight gets really dirty along with the front part of the gun from the ports.

So I guess the question is do I buy the ported or do I look for a non-ported. All of the XD's around here are $500 regardless of model. At least that is my experience.

Anyone else have any comments regarding the pistol? I read over at the XD site, but there was little comment about the ported model. Just that it is louder, dirtier, and hard to follow up shots at night due to the ports.

Ported XD

I bought an XD9 ported a few years back. Don't really need a ported gun for 9mm but it looked cool and boy, could I shoot nice groups with it. Had to constantly clean the front sight with a Q-tip every 30 rounds or so which I learned to live with. Then the thin metal strip between the ports on the slide cracked on one end. I sent it back to Springfield and they told me they could either cut the other end and completely remove it or they'd have to send me a new gun. I jumped on the new gun immediately and haven't regretted it one bit. Now my sight stays clean and boy, can I still shoot nice groups with it. I, personally wouldn't buy another unless they thickened the metal between the ports. Hope this helps.
