I recently purchased 3000 rounds of mixed brand once fired 9mm brass. I am currently processing the brass with a RCBS Trim-mate power unit. I have noticed that when reaming the primer pockets of the S & B brass, the pockets seem to be undersized and are extremely difficult to ream as opposed to all the other brands. They can actually seize up on the reamer and I am unable to hold them or remove them with fingers. Then I have to stop the power unit and carefully use a pliers to remove them. Has anyone experienced this problem?

S&B has the rep for tight primer pockets. I have had no trouble priming them, although you can feel the tight pocket. Good brass. I'll take all of it you don't want.

Unless you're really bored, there isn't any need to process that brass the way you're describing. I've loaded and shot maybe 100,000 9mm rounds over the years, and the only processing I ever had to do was remove the primer crimp from military brass and clean primer pockets.

As for the S&B brass, I've found it to be good brass in most cases. The primer pockets are on the snug side, but I look at that as a good thing. They don't like CCI primers, but Winchester, Remington and Federal all go in them just fine.

Hope this helps.

S&B Brass has little, if any, chamfer on the primer pocket. It makes the primer pocket seem tighter than it actually is and often catches the edge of the primer, either shaving a circle of brass from the primer cup, or causing the primer to cock sideways.

I use a lyman primer pocket reamer to chamfer the primer pocket in all my S&B Brass before loading. I chuck the reamer in a cheap drill press I bought for less than $40 at Harbor Freight and just chamfer a batch whenever the S&B brass accumulates.

BTW, this press works great with a LEE Trimmer. Chuck the cutter in the Drill Press. I chuck the shell holder in a spare Jacobs Chuck from an old electric drill and use to hold the shells up onto the cutter/pilot assy. Quick and easy trimmer for large quantities of brass (I trim only my .223 brass this way)

If your S&B brass needs the primer pockets camfered, use a 1/2" twist drill bit and just do a couple turns with your hands and wha-la...Camfered primer pockets...Otherwise then that, divide them in half and send Walkalong and me half (each) of what you don't want...

I have culled all (all that I can get identified) of it out of my cache(s) of brass.

I have a Dillon 650 and it's a royal pin in the arse when S&B comes through. I pulled my .45 ACP (about 500 pcs), .38 Special (300 pcs), and .44 Magnum (200 pcs) brass and gave it away to some who do not find the brass objectionable.

When I pick up the stuff at the range...I put it in the bin. It's not going home with me (intentionally anyway).

It may be that my progressive is my hang up, but I've only had two primer detonations at the press and both were with S&B brass.

Just my .02
Bob
