A friend has an older Smith revolver that she's willing to sell and I was hoping to get a ballpark value with highroad assistance. :D

Nickel S&W Model 10-5, serial D4245xx, with 4" tapered barrel with worn wood grips. I've shot it in the past, but that was before I had developed a real interest in wheel guns. Condition is probably 75% or so, and I'll need to reinspect it to do the "March" checkout.

I was hoping to discover approximate year of manufacture, rarity of this configuration (exceedingly common I imagine) and a ballpark idea of worth. If it checks out and the price is right I'll add it to my growing Smith collection. (586, 686-1, 625-8)

Thanks for any assistance in advance.

Greeting's drannor-

The Smith & Wesson Miliitary and Police (model 10) or
in your case 10-5 isn't rare at all. But, the model 10
remains as one of Smith's most popular models, and
has seen duty not only by the military and police; but
also by security agency's and private citizens alike!

I don't want to burst your bubble, but in 75% of its
original condition the S&W model 10 would net only
roughly between $150-169.95 (topps) in my neck of
the old woods. I would not want to invest over $125
from a personal standpoint; but then I'm kind'a a 'lil
bit of a tight wad anyway!:uhoh:  :D

S&W model 10-5 with serial number D4245XX was
made between the year's of 1972-1973.

I WILL burst your bubble. A M10 4" nickel plate goes for $225-300.00 in my neck of the woods. You could offer $175.00 due to the grips. A better set should run around $30.00.

In the book Standard Catalog Of Smith & Wesson
2nd edition by Supica & Nahas, a GOOD rated
Smith & Wesson model 10 only brings $160.

My dealer just blew out 200 model 10's that he had
purchased in a lot from a contract security company
for $150 each!

$200, she IS a friend. That is $150-175 for the gun and the rest is generosity.

Check the auction sites also. They give a good idea of current pricing.

Gentlemen:

Thanks for the assistance. Not too much of a bubble to burst, I didn't think it would be worth too terribly much, as I've seen a plentitude of them about at gunshows. (Where pricing is highly questionable)

I've been hunting for a model 29, I may pass this one up and save the funds towards that purchase. Another mutual friend is considering this Smith as a first revolver / range piece to shoot with his wife. I will pass along this thread and he may decide to proceed.

Ala Dan:
You mention "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson", is this considered the source of reference for S&W valuations? I may be investing in such a book as my collection grows.

HSMITH:
I checked gunbroker and auctionarms, which had a variety of M10's in different configurations, but the pricing varied pretty wildly. My faith in internet auction sites for value has been steadily declining lately.

Thanks again.

Yes, here at THR most of us rely on that particular
publication; cuz we can look up a lot of vital information
on Smith & Wesson product's. And heck, for $24.95 you
can't go wrong by adding a copy to your firearms library.

I was introduced to Supica and Nahas by some of the more experienced S&W-heads on TFL/THR and it IS worth the price. Lots of interesting material on the many models and variations. Get it. You won't be disappointed.

Ordered.

I don't see older Smiths in Austin area gunshops often (models 27,28,29 at any rate) so I will be hitting the gunshow this weekend on a scouting expedition. I will note the prices I see and use the book for a sanity check once it arrives.

Join the club in that search for a Model 29. I've been hunting for a 4" 29-2 blue or nickle and haven't seen one for awhile. When I wasn't looking, well you know.:banghead:

Right now I've got a lot of expenses and luckily there aren't any gunshows I want to go to in the next month or so.:(

Dinosaur:

I can't help feeling I'm late to this game, I didn't get into firearms until a three years ago, and revolvers even more recently than that. I'm looking for a blued 29-2 or newer in anything from a 4" to 6" barrel. Saw several at a shop in Ft. Worth (along with a bevy of pythons) but the prices were $200 high.

I need to start another thread on classic N frame smiths to gather some more research. I've searched here, TFL, and S&W forum and still have some gaps.
