The PD (personal defense) has a carbon steel slide and lightweight frame for easy carry. I prefer a stainless slide and a stainless frame for a general purpose/target pistol for both looks and easy maintenance. If I planned on carrying it a lot I'd want the light weight frame. I'm guessing that they matched the PD's light weight frame with a carbon steel barrel for looks and because it's less flashy (darker) in a tactical situation.
I have the SC version and have only seen pictures of the PD version...SC version is really lite...I would like to handle a PD but no one in my area has one...I may check the S&W site and see how much difference there is in the weight.
Now I am confused too.. I see that there are blued slide 1911Scs. S&W doesn't carry the 1911Sc anymore. They replaced it with the 1911PD. They are supposed to be the same AFAIK.
Near as I can tell...at least for the commander sized models...The early Sc's were blued with the billboard etchings on the side. The next "generation" were the subtle etchings both in blue and stainless. These were still called SC's. Evidently the SC title has now been dropped and all the scandium guns are now called PD's and are blued. Everything clear as mud now???
