Probably field strip,as I suspect my mechanical ability is going to interfere with a detail strip.
Thanks for any help.

Field-stripping and reassembly of the 422, 622, 2213, 2214, 2206 and 2206TGT is simple, but can be a bit tricky the first couple of times you do it. The key is to remove the recoil spring guide rod plug from the top of the slide. This plug serves two purposes:
  • It provides the forward bearing surface for the recoil spring.
  • It limits the backward travel of the slide.
To remove the recoil spring guide rod plug it is necessary to push the recoil spring guide rod farther back into the slide. S&W provides a handy-dandy tool to accomplish this. Unfortunately, this tool was designed by someone who apparently has three hands! I don't have three hands, so I do it my way.

Required Tools:

  • One empty 22LR case.

To Field-Strip:

  • Remove the magazine.
  • Rack the slide and lock it open with the slide stop.
  • Hold the pistol with the muzzle pointing straight up.
  • In the front of the slide, you will be able to see the tip of the recoil spring guide rod.
  • Slip the open mouth of an empty .22LR case over the tip of the recoil spring guide rod.
  • With the pistol still pointing up, draw the slide back to release the slide stop and slowly let the slide close until the cartridge case abuts against the frame. After completion of this step there should be a little bit of fore and aft slide motion during which the slide is not under tension from the recoil spring.
  • With the slide at the foremost position of this range, lift the recoil spring guide rod plug from the top of the slide.
  • Draw the slide all the way back. It will go back considerably farther than it did with the recoil spring quide rod plug in place.
  • While holding the slide all the way back, grab the recoil spring guide rod and cartridge case and remove the recoil spring and recoil spring guide rod from the pistol.
  • With the slide all the way to the rear, lift it from the frame.

To Reassemble:

  • Observe that one face of the recoil spring guide rod plug has a circular recess cut into it.
  • Place the slide onto the frame by lowering it over the barrel extension that extends back over the magazine well.
  • Slip the recoil spring and recoil spring guide rod into the slide. Do not attempt to compress the spring.
  • With the pistol pointing up, slip the mouth of the cartridge case over the tip of the recoil spring guide rod.
  • While holding the slide all the way to the rear, grab the recoil spring guide rod and cartridge case and compress the spring into the slide. The cartridge case should end up abutting the frame, the way it did when you took the pistol apart. This part may be a bit tricky the first couple of times you do it, and bad language is permitted.
  • Push the slide forward. It may or may not go all the way. You want to position the slide so that you can see the narrow part of the recoil spring guide rod through the cut in the top of the slide. You may have to wiggle things around a little bit.
  • With the circular recess to the rear, insert the recoil spring guide rod plug into the top of the slide.
  • Draw the slide back to release the cartridge case.

2213/2206tgt User Manual

HammerBite...Thank you for the information that you put in the forum...I realize that it was posted a long time ago but I just received this gun, (S&W 2206TGT) and cannot locate a manual anywhere for it - not even from S&W.

From your post I am going to assume that the 2213 manual is basically the same as the 2206tgt but I could be wrong.

I hate to ask this but is there any way possible that you could scan and send a copy of your manual to me? I'd really appreciate it because I don't like using a weapon that I don't have a manual for.

Thank you very much for your assistance in this.

Onmilo...
Sorry that it took me so long to get back to you but I had a "bit" of trouble...The VA decided to keep me and I finally got well enough to get back home.

If it is no trouble I'd like to take you up on your offer of the pictures...re maintence/strip down of an S&W 2206.

Thanks for your time.

There are several videos on youtube regarding this series. One guy has posted a complete disassembly and reassembly. If you're brave enough. Lots of parts in there.
I find that field stripping this to be easier than the Rugers.
