Picked up this 27-2 w/ 8 3/8 barrel TH TT
SN#N446xxx . Everything on it is nice except the cylinder. It is not pitted but spotted where the bluing has been lost, was thinking maybe blood did this but then it is only on the cylinder and no other part of the gun, Thinking of having the cylinder reblued, woould cost $30-$40 bucks for a hot blue. Nothing wrong with the gun otherwise.shoots great. Judging from the SN it looks to be a 1978 model. I paid $225.00 for it, which for a shooter I didn't think was to bad

If it were mine, I would have the entire gun reblued. The model 27 is a great gun and you bought it a good price. I would call Smith and ask what they would charge.

I would have bought that in a heart beat.
A $100 more Would still be a good find.
Beauty is only skin deep but it goes farther with that revolver.

If interested in justice that 27 should be allowed to shoot the man that did that to him!
Kidding of course. If you are not interested in a collectors item, and no collector would buy that disfigured cylinder (that's why you got it cheap, and boy did you get it cheap even for 8" bbl.) Then you are in an enviable position from my point of view. You have at least 350.00 to put into making it a refinished perfectly operating copy of one of the finest ever made and YOU CAN SHOOT THE BEJEESUS OUT OF IT. And then get what you have in it on gunbroker if you are patient.

It may not be "combat balanced" but it will shoot any .357 load you can find with accuracy and class to spare. The dash 2 was made from '61 to '81 or early '82 so your date of manufacture seems good. If you are not already a model 27 afficianado, pay close attention to the workmanship and detail on this revolver.

You will not see it's like again. Some believe that for full house .357, it don't get any better than this.

I'm with starter - the grips are worth some cash themselves. I'm not a guy to say reblue, but in this case and cost I would.

That is a silly low price. You had no choice but to buy it.

Nice, I would have bought that in a hot second. I sent one in to S&W in better condition than this one. I would seriously consider a refin if it is in your budget.

Send it back to Smith and have them work it over. Hell for the price you paid you can afford to have it dressed up :)

I'd have the factory do it. You know it wil be right. I've seen way too many "gunsmith" reblues that were poorly done, forever affecting the quality of the gun. Smith does an absolutely outstanding job, and the price will be competitive.

I saw one very nice 44 spl 1926 3rd model hand ejector that had been in the original family for ages, and been used by the original owner in his law enforcement career. It needed a blue. They had a gunsmith do it, he did a fair job in the sense of not ruining the lettering or edges by buffing too much, only the cylinder turned out purple. They were so disheartened they sold the gun. If Smith had done it, it would have been as close to perfect as it could be.

Called S&W this morning, back then they used a different bluing system than they use now, so it would be best to have the whole gun reblued so it dosen't come out a 2 tone color. Cylinder alone would be a little over hundred bucks and to do the whole gud a little over 3 hundred bucks shipping included. So at this point I will leave it as is.

Top condition 8 3/8" 27-2s here (Wash DC Virginia suburbs) go for around $700--if you can find them.

Note to Allen in MT--My wife is from Miles City, my mother's family was in Helena, and I went to college in Missoula.

Got the 27-2 back yesterday with a 40.00 cylinder blue job. looks great.
Have a 27-2 5" for a total bead blast and bluing that someone did a botched Gun Kote job on.

Yes indeed it does! Sure beats paying $300 for total reblue. I always loved the look of the 8 3/8" Model 27. I have one in a 27-3.
