Is it normal for S&W 27-2 to have dull tops or is that normal wear from shooting?

Does the rest of the gun's bluing appear normal?

Thanks in advance.

Bluing looks normal. The front of the cylinder is dirty from powder fouling and that is normal.

Looks like a decent gun. Pinned and recessed. Looks like a smooth target trigger and target hammer. Though the trigger could be serrated hard to tell from the pic. Looks to be in very good shape.

What do you mean by
dull tops
?

Along the top of the barrel from rear sight to front, the Model 27 had features that were intended to reduce or kill any glare that might have interfered with sighting. These features included "serrations" or shallow grooves machined from right to left or down the length of the barrel and a "matte" or dull finish rather than the high polish (shiny) to be found on it's flanks. Under certain conditions this can make a fairly dramatic difference in being able to shoot with some precision.

The Model 27 was the premium version of the N frame Smith .357 while the Model 28 or "Highway Patrolman" was the service or budget version.

Being a premium model, features in detail such as this and some "checkering" of the metal in certain places such as the backstrap of the grip frame (to channel perspiration or otherwise enhance a firm purchase on the grip) were a "cost be damned" attempt at the finest revolver that could be produced. The Mod 27 is not unique in this feature. Other premium model Smiths such as the Model 15 .38 special have it. Such things are also occasionally to be found from other producers as well.

I'm not sure what "dull tops" means either.

The top strap, rear sight leaf spring and top of the barrel rib on the M-27 are checkered, but they shouldn't be "dull". The M-28 had the top strap bead blasted to a matte finish...surely you don't have a M-27 with the bead blasted top strap?

The backstrap isn't checkered, from the factory, on any S&W that I'm aware of. The backstrap, below the shoulder is vertically serrated

I was addressing the dull top of the cylinder. I suspected it was from carbon fouling, but needed confirmation.

That's okay Hellishot... I'm sure you had at least a few of us check our safe queens for that!

Ok confusion solved.

BTW the top of the cylinder...whichever surface is under the topstrap at the time...can also get dull. It is also due to fouling from shooting lead

27s are normally checkered and finished in dull blue on the top strap.

I recently handled a late 90s era Model 27, 5" barrel and nickled that had bead blasted top strap like a Model 28 finished in matted nickle.

The op was never asking about the top strap. He was asking about the front of the cylinder. His question was answered.

Nice pictures though.
