They're VERY well thought of. But they're too large and heavy for a daily wear .357, so they fell out of favor with the general gun wearing public.
For a hunting gun, it's about right and it'll shoot as well as a Colt Python, with fewer cylinder timing problems. I've owned both, so can say that with conviction.
The M-27 soaks up recoil a lot better than smaller .357's. If you got yours for a "good price", you're very fortunate.
The target grips are too big for many users,but any N-frame replacement stocks will fit. I do prefer the older guns, without the big target hammer and trigger. They just handle better.

I should have mentioned in the original post, it came with the presentation case and all of the goodies normally found within. It is funny you mention the grips, I have hands that are on the small side and I absolutely love those target grips.
Very pretty wood. The 27 (and family) was always the top of the S&W line. Some folks think the 44 Magnum was their top gun, but the 27 is far more deluxe. Yes, the 27 is appreciated.

So what qualifies one to be a member of the S&W Mafia? I have about 40 of them, do I qualify?
My Model 27 is a No Dash. Actually a four screw. Mine came with regular service grips, and even firing it with 357 Magnum rounds, I find the weight of the gun keeps recoil at a pleasant level, even with the smaller grips. Yes, a Model 27 is much cooler than a Model 29.

Oh yeah Driftwood, if you have 40 of them you definitely qualify! I shot mine today and will post a target or two once I've cleaned my guns.
Darn thing is very manageable shooting PMC .357's and feels like a .22 shooting .38 Specials. The thing is darned accurate also as you'll see from my target.
Yours is an excellent example! The only thing better would have been the Registered Magnum I've read about.....
Edit: Here is one of the Targets from today's session a mix of 10 yards and 25 yards, mostly 10 as well as a mix of .357 Mag and .38 Special. There are a lot of bullets that went through that ragged hole in the middle.
Here is a video of me shooting .357 Mag's while holding my Iphone in video mode. (Not very easy, probably not the "safest" idea and something I wouldn't recommend.)

Love the 27's only have a couple of long tubes myself. You have a beauty.
Here is one unfired since the factory. Then a fired S pre-fix circa my birth year. Tonight cylinders open for a new look.

Mine has seen better days. Its freckling suggests it was stored in a holster or soft case for an extended period but appears to have been carried or shot very little. I got a very good deal on it and if I decide to keep it, I'll probably have it refinished.

I used to own a 27-2 in the short barrel.
It is the ultimate revolver. Makes shooting .357 cake.
They just drip with what you would call hand built custom today. The blue on mine was spectacular.

Gorgeous. My grail gun is a 5" Model 27.
In the meantime I will content myself with my 4" Model 28.
