Can anyone tell me anything about a S&W .32-20 Ser # 138553? It is in good condition, I still fire it. I have the origional plastic grips but put S&W wood grips on now (plastic looked too much like a toy with kids in the house). I know it is at least 50 years old and suspect it is much older.

Anything I learn will be appreciated.

Post this question over at the smith-wessonforum.com. There is a guy over there that has been studying them for years and knows quite a bit. I forget his screen name but he hunts for titles with 32-20 in it. He has helped me find out much information on mine.

Your "32-20, 1905 Hand Ejector, 4th Change was made somewhere between 1915 to 1940 when the model was discontinued. Most likely, given the serial number, it was made during the middle-latter 1930's.

The stocks that came on it are not plastic, but black hard rubber - and if they are not cracked or chiped are valuable in themselves. You will probably find that they are numbered on the underside to your revolver because they were individually fitted to each gun they were installed on.

There is no reason to not shoot it if the gun is in good condition, but be sure the box of cartridges does not say "for use in rifles only." This is unlikey, but could happen.
