I have a S&W 38 special ctg. ser #K1829xx. can anyone tell me age / value? some bluing rubbing off barrel. wood grips.

1953

It is a pre-model number K-38 4" Combat Masterpiece.

It later became the Model 15 in 1957.

Value might be around $250 - $300 with the amount of blue wear it has.

At any rate, it is one of the finest .38 Special revolvers anyone has ever made.
That one right there would make a perfect shooter / nightstand gun!

Thanks so much for the info. Will clean it up and buy some rounds, then ff the the range!

As you probably know by now, "38 special ctg." is rollmarked onto the barrel to tell you what ammo the gun is chambered for. It's not the model number of the gun itself.

Looks nice. Enjoy it!

Also, the grips are not correct. They are wonderful guns though. I bought one in slightly better condition about two years ago for $250. I think they are a steal at that price.

Yep. The grips that would be original to that gun would have diamonds around the screw holes, and sharp, "high horned" shoulders. It also looks like someone replaced the original "fishhook" hammer with a later target hammer.

These are really things that would only matter to a collector gun. That one should be a heck of a shooter, like the one I have, and will outlast you.

eta: here's a pic of one with the correct grips and hammer that I just grabbed. The hammer on yours could be original though. There are others here who can tell you a lot more about them than I can.

We also have a 38 S&W Special CTG. The numbers below the grips appear to be 3532xx, does anyone know anything about this gun?

To repeat, "38 S&W Special CTG" isn't the model number. It just tells you what type of ammunition to use with the gun. Smith & Wesson has made a LOT of guns chambered in .38 Special. Without more info, it's impossible to tell what you have. If it's a blued finish, it could be a Model 10. If it's stainless, it could be a Model 64. There are lots of other possibilities. Pictures would help.

Thank You, I'm trying to upload a picture, but with no luck. The gun is plated if that helps.
