I can't give a current value on the gun. in 2006 the Standard Catalog of S&W gave a value of $165 in fair condition, $275 in good condition.
The grips are the only style that will fit that gun, there is a notch in the backstrap that they are fitted to.
The gun lacks a positive internal hammer block safety, so the chamber under the hammer should be left empty. If dropped it could fire. It was made after heat treatment of cylinders was introduced and should be safe to fire with any modern ammo, assuming good mechanical condition.
