Now that the Minnesota legislature passed a "shall issue" law for the second time in three years (the courts killed the first one on a technicality) I'm looking for a good everyday CCW. The law in Minnesota does not actually require concealment, but I dont want to draw attention to myself. So I want something small, light and reliable but not a mouse gun. Right now I'm considering either the S&W 342 or S&W 296. They are both discontinued and can be found used for $400 or less. I guess my real question is whether it is worth stepping up to the 296. I like the idea of having a big bore .44 special, but dont know what to expect in terms of recoil. Has anyone fired a 296 or use it as a CCW?

Go for the 342. I have one, and it is a pure joy to carry. The only thing to really worry about these days is thugs being vested up. In that case, the .38 or the.44 is inadequate for a COM shot. Aim for the head. Sometimes, I think it would be better to pack a .22 revolver, 9 shot capacity, and aim for the head with rapid shots. NO recoil, and you know that the .22 will take out the old computer. Sorry about the diversion to .22's, just thinking out loud. Go with the 342. Been carrying one for 6 years, no complaints.
