Ok, tell me I am not crazy, or crazier than I really am..

Back in the late 60 or early 70 I bought a S&W 38 revolver with a hidden hammer. Small gun, I “think” it was a detective special? some allow frame, I searched high and low for info on this gun, but for the life of me can’t find it anywhere… btw, I don’t have it any more, ex wife had it last time I knew.. :cuss:

Am I nuts? Or what

Dective Special was a Colt Model. However The airweight Model 42, the Centennial was in production from 1952 to 1974. Inclosed hammer, airweight, sounds like your gun.

Neither the 642 or 638 existed in the ‘60s/70s. The 638 was introduced in the late’ 90s and I’m not sure about the 642. If the gun you remember had a little nub with which you could cock it, it was either a M38 (aluminum frame) or a M49 (steel frame). If there was no provision for cocking and it had a grip safety, it was a M42. The M38/49 was known as the Bodyguard and the M42 the Centennial. The current Bodyguard is now the M638/649 and the Centennial was re-introduced a year or so ago.

For letting the ex take it? YUP! :neener:

Here is a picture of my Model 38 Bodyguard.

If yours looked like that, thats probably what it was.

that looks a lot like it,, except that , as I remember, was not shiny,, blued.

hammer looks right anyway.. I will do some more digging from the links posted,, no biggie, ,just one of those things that sticks in your mind..

I'm not sure what you mean by hidden , but I had a steel S & W Model 38 bodyguard that had a shrouded hammer. You could either shoot it single or double action. Stupid me sold it
