I have a 4006 that has been a safe queen for probably 12-15 years. I get her out recently and fire her. I forgot how nice the Gen 3 Smith's are! This old girl is a chuck of steel! It feels good in the hand, is very controllable and recoil is light. I got interested enough to dig out the original box. Under the features label it says "Heavy Barrel." Does anyone know if this was an option? It was a gift to me from my wife so I didn't pick it out.

Thanks!

Was the box checked that says heavy barrel?

Most likely not.

They used the same box labels on the center-fire auto pistols as they used on the Model 41 .22 target pistol.

One of the options on it was a heavy barrel.

All the centerfire pistols came with standard barrels for that model.

When you get the pictures to show up I'd be interested to see them. This has come up before. Their older revolvers, particularly the M&P/Model 10s, had both tapered ("skinny") and heavy barrels. I see no way that there can be a "heavy barrel" option for this model. A heavy barrel is larger in diameter than standard. The barrel of this pistol cannot be made bigger without also making the slide bigger.

Gentlemen, I thought that I had a photo of the box label uploaded but I can't seem to get it to work. The label has several bits of info on it including model number, product number, caliber, finish and features. Under the features it reads: Heavy BBL.

Sorry for the lack of a photo. I got frustrated trying to load it. I'm curious about the designation, but it's not important enough for me to spend an hour trying to upload a photo.
Thanks for your interest!

I poured through the most recent Fjestad Blue Book, and there's no mention of any 4006 with a heavy barrel (as an option or otherwise.) The do mention a model with 3 1/2" barrel, while the standard seems to be 4". The Blue Book is NOT a S&W reference document, so it's clearly NOT definitive -- but it is sometimes a great source of info.

A quick visit to the Smith & Wesson forum -- I go there from time to time with technical issues -- should get you an answer. The folks there KNOW their S&W semi-autos.

Thank you Walt. I'm simply curious about the designation. I have a renewed interest in the steel s&w pistols. I recently acquired a 1006 and a 1066! I love the 10mm cartridge!

The S&W 3rd Gen pistol and the 10mm Auto cartridge are the greatest combo since peanut butter and jelly.
