I like my 642... but it can get a bit feisty with defensive loads. In my world it’s not much of a “fun” gun, I have lots of other revolvers for that, but it will show poor form and trigger pull mistakes rather quickly with the WC/Bullseye combo on the range.

You won’t go wrong with one, they are very versatile little guns .

Let us know how it shoots for you when you bring one home :).

Stay safe.

Pretty much the difference between a 642 and 442 is the color of the gun. Both are aluminum frame with stainless barrel and cylinder.

The 642 looks like a “stainless” gun while the 442 looks like a “blued steel” gun.

Similar for the 637 and 437 these days.

I have a recent production Model 60 that is stainless frame, barrel. and cylinder.

Depending on the model and vintage, the construction materials will vary.

Try Hornady American Gunner .38 Special in your J frames. It’s accurate in my guns. It is not +P so recoil is tolerable and it makes a double taps easy, but it doesn’t do well in gelatin regarding expansion.

Here is some interesting info regarding SD ammo and performance from 2” & 4” guns.

Note the 148 gr HBWC gives 15.8" of penetration. More than many of the more expensive SD rounds and within that sweet spot for penetration.

Whilst it doesn't expand remember the bullet is starting out in a shape a hollowpoint has to expand a bit to get to.

Ok hate to do it but drawing blood is no fun. I think I am gonna take the dremel to the cylinder release and smooth it up a bit, it contacts my thumb just above knuckle. It is just like a serated knife. It is a replacable part so not worried. Was shooting somewhat hotter loads today and it nailed me again. I also put a bit of nail polish on front sight that helps a lot. Need a brighter color but way better. Wish there was a bit longer of flat spot on front sight but don't really wanta dremel that.

Great choice going with the Model 637! For my two J frame snubbies I like the DeSantis SOF TUCK IWB holster.

Perhaps different grips would help versus altering the metal. On my model 36 I had the Magna grips. By installing a BK “Tee” grip it helped with the knuckle racking but not much for the cylinder release occasionally whacking my thumb knuckle. I installed a Hogue Monogrip and have been happy since, but the Hogue grip is big so concealing it would be harder.

Those ERGO grips really DO make a difference though

I also tried those. They do work great but I wasn’t willing to put the work in to shooting them well. A friend has some severe wrist issues so I gave the grip to him. He likes it very much.

Using boot grips?

Nope still using what came with gun. I like how they fit my hand just need to concentrate more on my thumb placement.
