I am have a friend who has one he wants to sell, he wants 500 bucks for it. I however have never shot one or even held one (I havent got to inspect his yet just seen the pictures) It has been well taken care of since he bought it. Any feedback on this model gun? Thanks.

Outstanding handgun. Tough, reliable, and accurate. But you won't carry one in a front pocket. It's a big heavy chunk of Stainless Steel.

At that price point, it should be in very good condition, if so, not a bad deal.

The warranty from Smith is second to none. If something does wrong, they ship and fix on their dime.

They are a good solid gun...IMO, $500 is too high for one. I wouldn't give a penny over $400 for the nicest one out there.

What jay south said. They're one helluva combat auto. They're also one of the very few that can handle .45 Super.

If it's a 4506-1, they're even stronger than the first variant(the -1 uses the 1006's heavier frame and slide profile).

I have a no dash 4506 and a 4516-1 (3.5" barrel, bobbed hammer, short grip; 7 shot). Both happily digest my 600 ft/lb handloads, both have been quite accurate, and I've never had a jam in either.

+1 on all that.

At $500, it should be in excellent condition, come with several magazines, and night sights.

They're not paying for it; you are

In response to those who would tell you what to pay for it; I suppose another one for $350 is going to jump in your lap today? Lets' put it this way; the things you want in a gun for the money are there; yes, up to about $500; I'd stop about there, as I have several and know they can be had for less; but I think the value for money is there.

Its' worth what its' worth to you; if you watch Gunbroker, you may be aware of a disturbing trend; No 4506 there is going for less than $450 right now, and buyers seem to have become aware of the value of this what I have come to regard as a sleeper; there are some very expensive "plain jane" 4506's there at the moment that have been there a long time; if you want to see overpriced, see anything with "Colt" stamped on it. How a basic 1911 is worth over a grand is impossible to me.

As above; built like tanks, extremely reliable and all 4 of mine very accurate; any scratches can be cleaned up with a scotchbrite pad, Hogue grips are prettier but feel worse IMO;
(its' all my opinion of course, but everyone is entitled to my opinion)!
I have ended up liking the factory straight backed grips and appreciating how FLAT the gun is!
If its' a -1, it will probably also accept a 4566 or 4516 upper, giving you some interesting flexibility; finding holsters is a bit grim, but not impossible; I really like El Paso Saddlery Street Combat (Open top tortilla with lining).

Cheers, TF

I really don't care if Castle and Beckett share another kiss; when will she trust him with her BUG?

Very nice handgun. Accurate, low recoil, very reliable, never once burped on anything I have loaded in it.

It is heavy and you may find that getting a holster to fit is is hard though I like the M&P 45 leather holsters, they will fit the 4506 very well. Also some of the Sig 220 holsters will fit the 4506 very well.

The price is a bit high (maybe by $50-100) but if it comes with enough accessories or if you fall in love with it then get it.

Its' worth what its' worth to you;

Maybe so, but it's also only worth what it's really worth and I wouldn't pay a dime more than $500.00 for one in excellent condition. The 4505 and its variants were fine pistols and I like them a lot, but, for various reasons and non-reasons, they were never really popular and still aren't-and the price you pay for one should reflect that puzzling reality.

Great gun!... Smith third-gens are classic tack-drivers...
If you want to own a true, all-metal classic the third-gens are it.
Have the 45 and the 4006 and I love 'em...
The $500 is a bit high unless it's LNIB...
Good luck.

Buy it! Great weapon. Prices keep going up so it would be a good investment...especially if you can get it any cheaper. Wish I had my 1006 back :(

Great help everyboody

Thanks for all the help guys I think I am going to pick it up, I will post pictures soon.

Another vote for picking it up... $500.00 is a bit high, but so long as it's in good to excellent condition and comes with a good number of mags, box, and papers it really isn't a bad deal. If it's a -1 model, I would be more inclined to pick it up.

Wish I never sold mine...

I'll agree that they're good guns, and also agree that $500 is a bit too high.

I picked up an ANIB one, recently, for a bit more than $300. You can find them around here in the $350-$450 range regularly. Nice gun, and one of the best shooting .45s I've owned.

I have NO experience with the Smith & Wesson 4506 BUT I DID carry a Smith & Wesson 4566 as a Law Enforcement duty weapon for a little while...seemed like a well built pistol but accuracy was HORRIBLE....wasn't just me as most everybody on the Dept had same impressions...not accurate...I grew up shooting 1911s, Hi Powers, and always qualified expert in the ARMY with a pistol.....I have been Law Enforcement firearms instructor, tac team, and always qualify with one of the top scores in dept quals but I COULD NOT shoot S&W 4566 well ...... Maybe S&W 4506 is better I dont know.

Carried a 4506-1 through the police academy in 1994. Shot 228 out of 250 in quals and it was 100% reliable shooting some very dirty academy supplied 200 grain SWC reloads.

Buy it, but try to talk down the price if possible. Cash will usually help the process.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

I have a 1006, not a 4506. It is an excellent shooter, and recoil is very well-managed, even using full-powered loads. I imagine this experience translates to the 4506 exactly. Needless to say, this gun is going nowhere. I have not seen many 4506s listed for under $400 that were in good shape. The cheap ones are usually beat-up. I'd pay $500 for one without feeling ripped off. $450 would be better, but...

I've got a 4576 that I bought new in 91 or 92. I carried it as a reserve deputy for years. A little heavy but it's been trouble free.
