I have a chance to snag a like new S&W 4513TSW 45 Tactical for $330. It seems like a fair price to me, maybe even a good one. This one has the cutout in the frame and the rail. I'm not a rail guy but I would like to have one railed 3rd Gen gun, and a .45 is always good. This guns appears different from the trypical 3rd Gen Smith with the cutout contour in the frame and the rail, but is there anything else different about them that isn't apparent to the eye?

Not certain about the TDA TSW's, but the railed DAO TSW's will have a different degree of partial cocking than the non-railed versions.

Post your question here - KurtC or some of the other folks will be able to get you the answer you seek...

Going page by page at the Smith Forum I found this to answer my question, and FYI:

The TSW series pistols have advancements pioneered by the Performance Center during the mid-90's, one of which is the closer tolerances provided by the full length box rails.

The TSW pistols with the accessory rail have slides that were hand fitted to the frames. There should be matching numbers etched beneath the slide and under the grip.

I am not sure if the if the pre-rail TSW guns have the etched numbers.

These guns are by far some of the most reliable .45's on the market. They will even feed empty cases.

As it turns out the gun isn't a 4513TSW. It's a 4563TSW. That suits me fine as this wasn't to be a carry gun and already having a compact 4516-1 a full size gun is more desirable. It sort of threw me as I was looking for a compact in the case and when I couldn't find it I thought the gun had been sold. The price was $349 as opposed to $the $329 that I thought it was, but it's in 99% shape and probably worth another $150 to $200 if you can find one. I may change a few springs, but othe rthan that the gun is good to go.

The slide to frame fit is very tight. It's true that the hand fitted frame and slide have matching three digit numbers. On the slide it's underneath on the bottom towards the rear, and on the frame it's on the rear flat back of the frame. I'm a really happy camper, so far.
