I just bought a late 60's or early 70's S&W 49 NIB unfired for $349.
I plan to use it for ccw during summer. Was this a good choice over
the new aluminum j frames (they cost the same price)?
I have heard that the older smiths are higher quality.

It's a nice gun. A model of this vintage probably has the thinner front sight, so it might be a little harder to get a good sight picture in dim light, but if it works well for you, don't worry about it. The shrouded contours are nice for pocket carry, I carry a Model 38 (airweight version) on occasion. I don't feel that the single action cocking feature is of much value for a defensive gun, but it does allow for some versatility at the range. I use the Uncle Mike's boot grips, which are synthetic grips based on Craig Spegel's design.

Fine little revolver. I own one that was manufactured in 73. It works and it's easy to conceal. What more can you ask for?

Pocket holster

unreal45,

I have the newer model 649 in stainless. I use a pocket holster made by Robert Mika

It is the round bottom pocket holster and it costs 15.95 delivered. The model 49 might be a bit heavy for some folks but I like it in the pocket holster. Tell Robert Gary Morris sent you.

I also use a Ken Null Model SKR shoulder rig. It is a muzzle up holster and is remarkably light and really does carry very nicely.

These holsters and straps a very light with a total weight of about 2 ounces. The holsters are hand molded using a real weapon. Give it a look.

I have the 649, and love the pistol. I use either a (gasp!) Uncle Mike's IWB clip on holster or a Bianchi speedmaster paddle holster, if I'm wearing a longer covering garment. A set of Bianchi spped strips, an Uncle Mike's boot grip, and you are set, my friend.

My local gunshop had three unfired 49s ,from the 70s, for sale.
I almost bought a matching pair.

I ordered one of those pocket holsters from Robert Mika.
How can you go wrong with a hand made holster delivered to your door for the price of an Uncle Mike's holster. :D
BTW I let him know you sent me.
Thanks for the heads-up man.

She said i could get both but i decided not to.
She likes guns. She wants to buy one for herself.
:D

A 49 is my regular carry gun. I use an Uncle Mike's nylon pocket holster. It's getting pretty worn, so I'm looking for a new holster, preferably one that won't print. A stiff piece of cardboard will cover it, but I keep forgetting. Fortunately, most people aren't paying attention.

When you get it, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! Those little guns are great, but they are very easy to miss with. At the very least, shoot a box of ammo each range trip. As much as you can, practice close (if not contact) shooting, since that is where it will most likely be used. Also, I try to shoot the BG first, while I'm "cold", since this will be the real world situation, if you need to use it.

PS; Did I mention PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE? :D

I am lucky enough to have built a shooting range off the deck of my house
so i shoot a couple times a week. :D
Practice will do wonders for DA accuracy.
