I plan on shooting factory loads in my 357 mag revolvers- I have one each of the above..Which do you feel will hold up better in the long run. They appear to be about the same size frames.

I don't have a Colt, but I do love my S&W 586!

Are you saying you will only shoot factory .357 rounds in your gun? I have never met anyone who didn't shoot a fair diet of .38's in their magnum revolvers.

Shooting .38's with a light diet of .357's, you will never wear out either wheelgun.

Both are excellent revolvers. If you're conscerned about durability, the S&W holds the edge here.

The lock works are different and the S&W has the potential to stay in time longer.

Shoot them both and enjoy them.

Actually I think the Colt is stronger but for all practical purposes there is no differences.

Colt "J" Frame

Colt MKIII revolvers are built on Colts' "J" frame. They are a very sturdy design and will hold up to heavy loads with out the so called tendency to go out of time, like the older Colt actions such as the Python. It is a stronger and larger frame than a S&W 586 "L" Frame. :scrutiny:

I'd have to say the Colt is better and stronger. It is probably the strongest frame Colt had for a 357. However, you should have no problems with either gun as they are designed to shoot 357 loads.

Although Colt holds its own with the frame size of the gun, I'd have to compare focing cones, hand and wratchet sizes.

Both the Trooper and the 586 are designed for .357, while the K-frames weren't. That given, I'd say it's a wash with a slight advantage going to the Smith.

Smith

Of the two guns, the S&W was a reaction to the COLT and a better design. S&W started having so many problems with the K-frame .357 magnums, they brought out the 581 and 681 fixed sight guns and the adjustable sighted 586 and 686. These guns are built on the L-frame specifically for the .357 magnum cartridge and are quite strong.

COLT had the advantage with the Official Police mid size frame. It was sized for the old .41 COLT round and was slightly larger than the SMITH. COLT replaced the midsize guns (except for the PYTHON) with the MK III models, which were cheaper to make, Then they started getting complaints about timing problems, if I remember correctly.
COLT eventually brought out the MK V series, but then revolvers were on the way out with cops.

Both are awesome revolvers. I have owned both and I would not put one above the other. Both are durable and will last a lifetime. Which do you like to shoot the most?
