S&W 586 - any good?

I saw a S&W 586 for sale. It seemed in good shape, thought didn't run through all the paces in the sticky post. About a 4" barrel, blued finish.

What is this thing? K-frame, N-frame?

Are they generally a quality model?

I know nothing about revolvers. I couldn't fine a 586 on S&W's web site, maybe an obsolete model?

The 586/686 is on the S&W L-Frame. In my opinion the 586/686 is a top pick for a .357 magnum revolver. The L frames are my favorite size for the .357 mag. I believe the 586 has been discontinued, and the stainless 686 is the only option currently available.

Superb gun. As Irecall, the 586 is the blued version of the 686. I have a 686 and it is a great fun gun to shoot and very accurate. If the price were right, you won't be disappointed. (Well, even if the price is not "right", it still is a nice gun!)

L-Frame S&W. Frame size between N & K. Grip frame same as K frame. The 686 is a stainless version of the 586. They are great sixguns. My choice for a DA 357.

I've got a 686

The only difference is the 5 series is blued. Nice guns. A little heavier than the 19/66 series, but more likely to hold up to a steady diet of full power magnum loads.

I have a 6" 586 no dash with Pachmayr grips. It has been an excellent weapon for the 19 years that I have owned it. It is a hoot to shoot and very accurate.

One of the best, optimized for longevity of .357 shooting (compared to K frame) and the DA trigger pull is the best of S&Ws. Why haven't you bought it yet.

My first handgun was a 6" 586 manufactured in the early 80s. It is an awesome handgun. Smooth as butter, very accurate and well-balanced, and fine looking. And it is pretty rugged.

I still have it and I shoot it whenever I can-- usually along with my H&K USP .45.

Snap that baby up!

A 686 was my first handgn purchase, ever. S&W always had the edge with smooth triggers. With the 586/686, they have a revo that will handle the stoutest of .357mag loads.

A 686/586 with a 4" bbl is likely the most versatile handgun made, IMHO.

I'm on my second stainless S&W model 686, and I'm here to tell you this gun
(along with the model 586) are some mighty fine .357 magnums. My first
686 was a very early production 4" barrel version; and my newest 686 is a
6 incher~! You gotta luv 'em.

I agree with the others and think the 585/686 is the best all around handgun anyone could decide to own. Accurate, reliable and durable pretty much sums up the 586 and they're not bad lookin either.

I've got a no-dash 686 that has the best double action trigger pull I have ever felt. Plus, it groups like a target pistol. Fantastic guns. There is no reason the 586 wouldn't be every bit as nice.
