Sky I got 2 from CDNN last month. One is real nice with just the little bit of carry shine. The other is too except someone put several deep chisel gouges in the frame under the sight and even pounded the safety. I was unhappy about that and called CDNN to see if they had a different slide and they said no. Didn't get too tiffed because I knew it was used but I just don't understand gun abuse at all.

Haven't taken mine out shooting yet but I did have a 915 before and love love loved it. Very dependable and more accurate than I am.

I am so glad mine had no dings or scratches! The problem with the CDNN purchase is no hand picks which made me concerned before my purchase. Sorry about the chisel marks on one of yours but hopefully it will function and be accurate for you..

Sky it is a 3rd gen Smith so I am not too worried about function and accuracy. It does look bad but you do have to look. To the casual eye sweep it isn't horrendous.

Beautiful guns huh?

Very nice! Third generation S&W's are very high quality, and have a reputation for excellent accuracy. It's a shame that only Performance Center third-gen S&W's are made anymore. One of the worst blunders S&W ever made, in my opinion.

That is a great price for a classic handgun. I am a fan of the Smith 3rd Generation autos. I currently have the 4506 (full sized all steel 45) and the 3913 (allow frame single stacked 9mm) Both of my guns have been excellent with no issue at all. I am sure that you will get years of reliable fun use from your new handgun. Enjoy!

That's a steal for one of the best hi-cap 9mm's available. They're durable, reliable, accurate, but maybe a bit heavy.
IMO it's not a good time to trade one since the market is apparently flooded, but I recall this was the case with Browning Hi Powers some years back. (That's changed of course.)

I've sold most of my tuperware guns and just bought a pair of 3rd gen S&W autos. If you like the 5906, check out the 4506.
As for the DA trigger, it can be mastered with a little practice. I happen to like DA handguns.

The broken grip problem was handled in a recall. They replaced all the grips that cracked and allowed mainspring tension to go slack. That was back in the 90s. These are good pistols.

This is the first pistol I have ever owned with a decocker that works like this. Kinda makes me insecure with a round in the chamber as I hit the decocker! I have been letting the hammer down manually.

If you've never used a decocker, I suppose it can be disconcerting at first to watch the hammer drop when there's a round in the chamber and to hear a loud "click" at the end of its travel. But that's the way they're supposed to work and be used. It's never a good idea to defeat the decocker my trying to manually lower the hammer.

It may be reassuring to examine how the S&W safety/decocker works. If you look closely, it rotates a rather thick steel shield into position between the hammer and firing pin before the hammer falls, and if the trigger is forward then I believe the firing pin is locked in place as well.

Congrats on a great gun! Next up for me is a 4006 or 4506, depending on what's available when I'm ready to buy. I shoot neary 60% DA to master the first shot, works great!

I think the smaller sized S&W 669, 6906, 3913TSW and CS9 are perfectly sized.
Because they are alloy framed the weight isn't bad. Nice guns that just hit my want list radar screen.

If you really start liking the 5906, you can look for the 'big-brothers' (4006, 4566)...
Again, these third-gens are GREAT pistols and keepers!!!

We've had a 5904 since back when the 3rd generation guns were the latest design from Smith & Wesson, it's a great gun. :) Good accuracy, points well, looks great, very reliable. Would never sell it.

Once I wanted to see how dirty it could get without a malfunction. I just kept shooting it on various trips to the range, no cleaning, no oiling at all. Got to about 750 rounds before the slide wouldn't close fully after firing the previous round in the magazine (may have been an ammo issue, possibly the previous round was a little light on powder and didn't have enough oomph to work the slide fully). Just racked the slide manually to clear that round, the next round loaded in easy, and it kept right on firing after that for the rest of the range session (probably about another 150-200 rounds) without any problems. That's rather impressive. :)

It was really dirty when I cleaned it after getting back from the range. :) That's the kind of handgun I want, one you can put a few hundred rounds through, get it dirty, then stick in a holster with no cleaning and be sure it will fire a few more mags if you need it for real. Guns that have to be really clean, like some tack driver match guns, or they don't work reliably, are no good for serious use. You can't afford weapons that are finicky like that when you need them for real.

I think S&W should go back into at least a higher limited production of these guns. Make them a normal catalog offering. Quite a few gun owners would buy them. 10mm fans would especially buy the big steel 10mm guns right up, beautiful and built like a tank, they are perfect for shooting full power 10mm ammo. :)

We could try sending emails to Smith and letting them know that we want the metal guns back. Anyone know any email addresses that will let us reach someone who actually cares?

I'm really pleased with my 5906 Tactical Service Weapon [TSW] with it's Novak low mount adjustable carry sights. Its barrel diameter is just a little larger than the standard 5906 has, and there's also slightly more contour where the trigger guard meets the front of the grip frame. :)

I have a 5906TSW also... A Colorado Springs PD trade in that somehow made its way to the Colorado Springs store shelves... Anyway, it's one of my favorite guns to go out and pop caps with. Great guns...

Kind of an update here...I have shot every 9mm round bulk FMJ and hollow point I could lay my hands on with out a problem in this S&W. The 5906 for me is something I do not even consider some sort of malfunction occurring. Can something go wrong?? Sure....but I really expect this pistol to work every shot and have not been disappointed so far.

My '89 with factory adjustable sights...

It hasn't had any issues with any ammo since I've owned it. Very accurate to 25 yards. It's my nightstand pistol and frequent range toy.
I haven't seen another like it with the adjustable sights, but if I do...

That's good to know. I have a 4006 and the first thing I did was replace the grip with a crimson trace laser grip. For two reasons BESIDES the laser, actually. first was my 4006 came with a straight backed grip and I hate that. The crimson trace grip is arched. second is the crimson trace grip doesn't retain the spring. there is a separate part that inserts into the frame that secures the spring.

But based on your post, it appears my second reason wasn't necessary. Oh well.

I wish I could find one of these 3rd Gen S&Ws. I have been looking online for a few days and it seems its going to be prettttty difficult to find one :(

You can order direct from CDNN and have it shipped to your local FFL who does transfers. Mine charges $25 for a transfer.
