Can anyone confirm or deny that the S&W 5906 9mm is legal for use in the Stock Service Pistol division of IDPA? I know the Smith is a pretty heavy gun, and I'm not sure if it checks in under the weight limit of 39 ounces including an empty magazine? The only info I could find on the weight of the 5906 was on wikipedia where the weight of the gun was listed as 38.3 ounces, but it did not say if that included an empty mag or not. Thanks. :)

I shot one for a while but it was before they started weighing guns at sanctioned matches.
In the old red rule book it was specifically listed as a SSP, but now it would have to make weight and I don't know if the catalog weight includes a magazine.

I'd contact HQ and let Robert Ray figure it out. Or call S&W and see if they remember it. Or post on the S&W board and see if somebody will weigh one for you.

If you don't already have one, require the seller to weigh it before paying.

If it doesn't make weight, how about a 5904.

my guess is nobody will care if it's a club match

when you are at the club match, ask the Match Director if he has a scale.

If the OP already has one, nobody at a club match or many sanctioned matches will notice or care. I have had my gun weighed twice over the past three years (Nationals and Tri-State Regional) and never before that.

If he already has one he can weigh it.

If he does not already own one, he should check it out.
I would not recommend buying a non-compliant gun.
No telling when some MD would decide to go by the strict rules.

Thanks for the response. I don't currently own a 5906, but have been thinking about adding a 9mm to my inventory that would also be legal for IDPA. If the gun isn't legal, that would be a deal killer for me. Thanks again.

I had a Performance Center 5906 that weighed 38.9 ounces with a 14-round (or 15? can't remember; orange follower) magazine. With the original 10-round magazine or a 14-round magazine and a curved grip installed it was over weight. I've been told the 5906PC is the only 5906 that will actually make SSP weight but I don't know this for sure.

While it was a very well made, accurate pistol I sold mine. If I want to shoot a TDA gun I found a prefer a Sig.

:scrutiny: I have checked the IDPA rule book and it states the firearm has to....

1. Have a maximum unloaded weight of 39oz., including an
empty magazine.

2. Fit in the IDPA gun test box measuring 8 ¾” x 6” x 1 5/8”
with an empty magazine inserted.

3. Be loaded to the division capacity of ten (10) rounds in the
magazine plus one (1) round in the chamber. Should division
capacity not be achievable because of lower magazine
capacity, load to maximum mechanical capacity of magazine
plus one (1) round in the chamber. Competitors must use the
same capacity magazines through out the competition.

This is the basic requirement for this div. You can find more info. at http://www.idpa.com/

Never in my life would I personally bend that much to be part of a sport. Go play IPSC, Steel Challenge, ICORE, Bullseye, anything and they will let you shoot your gun. OK, well ICORE is only for revolvers, but you get the point. Any other game will let you play with your toys, no need to figure out if they will let you play or not because they do not like your toys.

Holy crap! He just wants to participate in a sport with a very broadly defined set of rules, most of which aren't even strictly enforced at the club level. He isn't "bending" to the man, begging anyone's permission, or turning his guns over to the crusher! He's just asking what category his gun plays in! Sheesh!

He11, I demand my right to race Formula 1, but I'll be d@mned if I'll drive any other car than a Hundai! I WON'T BEND! :D

Go play ... ICORE ... Ok, well ICORE is only for revolvers, but you get the point.

Those B@ST@RDS! :cuss: ... :banghead: ... :D

My point was, and is that thee seems to be alot of rules. Many of which will not let everyone play. In all of the other games there is a spot for everyone and their toys.

Actually, almost any stock gun plays in IDPA. The weight limit is too keep people from using illegal adds, like heavy guide rods, etc.

Hey guys thanks again for the info.....

mudslinger- thanks for weighing your 5906, it looks like the gun just sneaks in under the weight limit. That is good news!
